Re: MealwormsDo they have any source of moisture?
Re: very small eggWhen mine started laying, I used to occasionally get 2 small eggs from one of my hens in the same day. Last time it happened, one of them had a really tiny yolk, and one of them was about 90% yolk...
Re: Chickens making a noise in the morningYou can get a timer to add onto the door opener so that it doesn't open before a certain time - then you could probably just leave him in the coop with the others. Obviously they would all have to wait for the door to open though.
Re: Chickens making a noise in the morningI have an automatic pop-hole opener on my coop which opens around 4:30am at the moment. Normally they don't make any noise until about 8:30am - yesterday was the only time they have made a racket at 5:30am and this was a different noise to usual which his why I think it might have been a cat. Intere...
Re: Chickens making a noise in the morningThe problem is that they are outside when they make the noise. What seems to happen is that one of the girls is inside laying (Meg seems to take about an hour to lay an egg) and the others are outside saying "get out of the nest box you've been in there all morning" in chicken language. Th...
Chickens making a noise in the morningMy girls have suddenly decided that 8:00am is noise o'clock - most morning they make an incredible racket for about half an hour. This morning they were even earlier and all started clucking at about 5:00am! It irritates me but I can live with it as they are my chickens - the problem is I think the ...
Re: Breeding MealwormsTo be honest I just have an interest in insects, so the idea of keeping them and watching their life cycle appeals to me. I think if I can't get these ones to breed I might buy some live mealworms and start a colony...
Breeding MealwormsThe other day I went upstairs and found some beetles crawling around - I think they are mealworm beetles. More info and pictures here . I have kept them in a container and am hoping to breed them so I can feed the mealworm larvae to my chickens. Has anyone ever tried this? Mealworms are expensive so...
Re: The morning routineI have a pop-hole opener and don't do anything in the morning! I normally change their water and food every 2-3 days and poo pick in the nest box where they sleep once a day when I collect the eggs. I never bother to poo pick outside in their run as I would have to crawl in there on my hands and kne...
Re: 2 eggs???I'm pretty sure one of mine laid 2 eggs in one day. At the time, one of mine was already laying, so when I got 3 in one day I thought they were all laying. After that it was about another week before I got 3 eggs again so I'm pretty sure both of the eggs came from the same hen. I got one in the morn...
Re: Eating snailsI was trying to get mine to eat snails for ages but I gave up. Then the other day they seemed to suddenly realise that they are edible and now they will chase each other around the garden for them. I think it took them a while to realise that there was food inside the shell...
Re: TreatsMine love dried mealworms the most but will also eat mixed corn and sweetcorn. I have tried to give them various vegetables but they never seemed interested. They also love most kinds of live insects - especially these nasty grub things that I dig up when I do the gardening. The more disgusting the ...
Re: What should chickens feel like? The weird thing is I noticed that I could feel one of mine's breast bone today too. Normally I grab my girls round the legs and underneath but for the first time today I grabbed one of them differently and thought it was weird being able to feel the breast bone...
