Re: Blood in egg

Thanks for that Bluebell, I must admit it did turn my stomach a bit. I was just glad that I had cracked the eggs into a bowl first otherwise we would have had some dodgy looking pasta!
Glad to know there's nothing wrong.

Blood in egg

Hi everyone, Just wondered if anyone could give any advice on this. Yesterday when I cracked one of the eggs, there was a lot of blood in the egg white, not just a blood spot, nearly half of the white was blood. I have been told that this can be a sign of a fertilised egg that didn't make it further...

Re: Fox deterent idea?

My hubby is working away at the moment and following our fox visit on Sunday I am struggling to find volunteers to 'mark' the territory, maybe we need to have a party! My nephews think I have gone mad (15 year olds), hubby has asked for more beer supplies so that he can help with it at the weekend! ...

Re: can stress change egg colour?

Thank you, I thought it must be the stress.
Had a good look though the defra info, was very interesting, especially about the grading of eggs, there are that many restricions I'm surprised any make grade A!

can stress change egg colour?

Hi, Bit of an odd question, but can stress cause the colour of the egg shell to change? We had a fox attack on Sunday evening (details on predators page) and this morning there were 4 eggs (5 chickens) and one of them was very white and crackled in appearance. I was expecting that laying might slow ...

Re: Visit from the fox :(

Most of the garden has a 6 foot fence and the rest has 40ft conifers with 3 ft high chicken wire at the bottom with the farmers post/rail/barbed wire fence behind the trees. Think the only way we can is to add another length of chicken wire above what's there now as it is obviously not having any tr...

Visit from the fox :(

Sad to say that we were a little later than usual going to shut the pen gate last night and had a very unfortunate visit from a fox resulting in 1 girl killed, another injured, 4 lucky escapees and a very lucky girl who my husband managed to get from the fox itself! We were just about to go shut the...

Re: Would a kestrel kill a chicken?

Thank you for that, I didn't think it was likely. She still hasn't reappeared, will have to wait it out and see, no one has seen anything.

Would a kestrel kill a chicken?

Hi everyone, Bit of a strange question I know, but would anyone think that a kestrel would kill/take a chicken? Yesterday my girls were roaming the garden (and neighbouring field they had found a way out to!) when we saw a large kestrel hovering. The girls were close up to the fence at both sides an...

Re: moulting the worst is over

we have 9 girls, 5 about 18 months and 4 about 6 months old. We have only had 3 littleys eggs in the last 2-3 weeks. 2 of the big ones are really moulting, much more than they did last year, loads of feathers everywhere but the others don't really seem to be losing many but no eggs. Hope it's not go...
