Re: Hemp bedding

We couldn't get aubiose today so had to buy Nedz Bedz as it was all they had in stock. It looks like they'll have great fun in it but I don't think it will be so easy for us to manage. We use it on the floor of our 17" x 6" run so I hope it will be OK.

Egg Laying

Some of you may remember we had loads of problems with our girls prolapsing and lost 3 chickens in 2 days. Rosie was poorly for some time and Penny seemed to escape from illness or any problems. We are now left with just Penny and Rosie and they are both well and thriving. A couple of mornings we ha...

Re: Does anyone ?

We use aubiose in our covered run and it's great, no smell, easy to poo pick and it gets changed every 4 to 6 weeks depending on how 'used' it looks. One bale does the whole run. In the winter we plastic 3 sides of the run so not too much of a problem with it getting wet. The only thing I would say ...

Re: Poor old Rosie still not well

Rosie has picked herself up today. She was out of the coop this morning without having to be enticed out and she is scoffing her mealworms today. We are now adding calcium supplement to their water, 2 5ml spoons per litre but we will only keep that up for a week or so until we see some improvement i...

Poor old Rosie still not well

Poor Rosie is still not right, she's standing around hunched up, she looks so miserable. She is still on her Baytril but the mass on her underneath is still there and the vet didn't seem to know what it was, if anything its harder and slightly bigger, if I didn't know better I'd day it was an egg bu...

Re: Having such a bad time with my girlies

We are having a major clean tomorrow, the remaining two girls will be taken out and put in a temporary run. We are going to dismantle the house and clean it with Poultry Shield and scrub the run with dilute jeyes fluid. After it's all dried we will dust with diatom and red mite powder in the house a...

Re: Having such a bad time with my girlies

It gets worse, Geraldine had to be pts tonight, she had also prolapsed, it had gone back in but the vet said she could feel a huge egg on the way and that it would prolapse again when she tried to lay. A different vet and assurance again that we are doing nothing wrong, it doesn't make us feel any b...

Re: Having such a bad time with my girlies

Thanks everyone, yes they are ex-batts but I was hoping they would at least make their first year with me, I had somehow convinced myself that they would be different and be with me for 3 or 4 years. I love my girls so much and am absolutely distraught at the thought of their suffering.

Having such a bad time with my girlies

We lost Daisy four weeks ago to a messy prolapse. Yesterday I had a call from my brother in law who had come in to check the chooks whilst I was at work to say Bella had prolapsed and was bleeding badly, took her to the vet but sadly she couldn't be saved either. Spent a lovely time in the run with ...

Our First Loss

Sadly we have just got back from the vet, having had to have Daisy pts. She had prolapsed and the others had a peck before I could get to her. The vet was lovely and pushed everything back in and thought we would give her a fighting chance, it had gone back in well and looked OK, sadly while he was ...

Re: Poorly Lily

Alls well, she passed what I think is part of the lining of her egg laying bits, and she's 200% better this morning and back in with her sisters. She had a good long drink last night before we settled her down in her vetbed infront of the radiator and a little tuna and mash and this morning back to ...

Re: Poorly Lily

Thank you both, no change at the moment except she's passed a creamy white poo. She is only fed layers mash with a few dried mealworms and some corn in the afternoon, they have greens hanging up in their run. I don't think her problem is an overlarge egg as her egg shell quality has been poor since ...

Poorly Lily

This morning Lily looked like she was desperate to lay an egg, running round like crazy until we'd finished cleaning out the box then dashed straight in. I went down a couple of hours later - no egg - but a poorly Lily girl. Thinking she might have another softie I brought her in and sat her in a ba...

Help Needed - Eggs with Tails

Over the last few weeks we have had a few eggs with tails, they are not soft exactly but the top end of the egg has been soft. Yesterday Penny had a tail hanging from her vent which I was able to very gently remove, she seems fine today. Today Lily had a tail hanging from her vent which the other gi...
