Sudden Death

This morning (5am) my husband let the chickens out before heading off to work they were both fine (yes, sadly we were down to two), and have been perfectly fine, eating, drinking and laying, grooming the last week also. I just nipped down to the coop to give them some corn as a treat and my White St...

Re: Friendliest hens for pets?

One of my ISA browns thinks she is a dog, she follows us about, lets herself in and out the large run and is quite happy to be held.

Re: Stupidly cold condition & chucks = ?

I have a rounded type plastic 4ltr drinker and discovered it was frozen the other morning, so with the remaining bubble wrap (And I have a lot over!) completely covered the thing and tapped it up. Oh thank you! I needed an idea for the g.pigs water, then hens only seems to freeze a little, and they...

Re: Stupidly cold condition & chucks = ?

I was very worried last year, and i needent have been. One night we had forgot to lock them up till late, when hubby remembered gone 10pm and went down to lock them up, even with the pop hole open it was toasty in there. Extra straw is a must though. Apart from that and a bit of warm water mixed wit...

Re: The chooks new home

goodness it looks lovely! The garden and the new hen area looks really nice and i bet the girls love it up there!
I did notice not only an increase in egg production when we moved ours but also the quality changed for the better and the hens seemed more ''busy''.

Re: Do Runs Really Need A Roof

My run is over 6ft high (STILL with no roof) and one hen always gets out. For the most part i find her killing the grass, but a few times she has got onto the guiniea pig hutch, then shed roof and gone for a wander down the street It is kind of funny when a neighbour says ''erm your chicken was at o...

Re: Are conifer needles poisonous?

Mine are under two, they love it as its good sheltre, and they are thirsty trees so keep the ground around them dry. The only thing i was told to keep an eye on was the sap, as if there are new branches aparently the sap can burn the chooks feet. Im alergic to the horrid stuff myself too, so i know ...

Re: Preparation for Winter!!

I was so shocked at how the hens didnt care less about all that snow. They were still out in it (though i had to restrict them to the run attached to the coop when it was very deep they werent happy). I went down one night, opened the coop door a little and put my hand in, they were warmer than me u...

Re: keeping the rain out

turnbuckles I've no idea what they are, but they make you saound even more pirate At your run. What a fab idea. Mine is usually ok, the trees soak up all the water so fast. BUT with almost now 4 weeks of nothing but rain, the front is starting to get like a bog, luckly the sides under the tree are ...

Re: Wing Clipping

I clipped my hens wings (by that i do mean feathers, and that is what farmers call it around here, they certainly dont mean bone wise!) when we first had them. It made no diference at all they can still jump higher than you would think! So after the mault i didnt do it again. I used to have a pet ga...

Re: Red mite

Just wondered how you are all getting on? The weather is really bad here at the moment so that may be helping, but apart from one or two dead ones i've not seen any further mites. I've now increased the gap inbetween spraying the flea powder to once a week, and am also dusting the girls with barrier...
