diatomaceous earcth

I want to buy a large (5kg) tub of Diatom. Looking online (amazon) theres various different makes..are they all of comparable quality or are some better than others?

gravel in run?

is there any reason I cant add some gravel to the chickens run? just normal driveway shingle..I have some I need to put somewhere but i dont want it anywhere in the main garden as it has Ground Elder roots mixed up in it from the font garden and I dont want it to spread into my back garden! thought ...

yes i knew they need grit to act as teeth but i just wondered if the soil had enough of it as they're pecking around on it all day...i did mix it in with the layers pellets with the old girls but just wondered whether it was reallt necesaary..

so far i havent given my new girls any extra grit or oyster shell..I thought I'd read that if they are on soil (which they are) they will get enough in their day to day scratching about..is this right? and what is the difference between grit and oyster shell? i mean i know they are different substan...

wood chips for run?

I'm having my cherry tree pruned on monday and was planning to put the chippings from it straight in the run for the girls. Somebody told me today they would be too green to put in yet? If this is the case how long before i could put them in?

thank iamdenise..i think keeping it simple is a good tip..i'm trying that this time..so far no extr scraps fro the kitchen and no corn..i think the kids might have gone a bit overboard with it last time as they loved the girls pecking it from their hands. I do want to have something that makes them ...

thanks silverback..that explains the acv..i will ge the proper stuff now i know :o) DS is well used to the chooks having had them for 3 years previously, he's been pecked a few times but it never matters to him..he's also the one who has picked up the dead chickens before and helped me put them in a...

i got the Smallholder pellets in the end..they didnt have an organic version though..but I'd like it if they had it! will have a look online!

thanks for all the great advice everyone am wondering whats so different about supermarket ACV?? different strength? I have poultry spice and i'll do the garlic thing too :o) i used verm-x before..the liquid.. but the chickens didnt ever seem to drink the water when i added the verm-x to it. i saw t...

oh good Jackie..i saw the solway ones recommended on here so thats why i got it..we have the eco hen loft and are going to put 6 in.. we had a plastic coop before but for many reasons decided to get a new one..apart from the hoo haa actually getting it..sending one back and the new one still not bei...

so we begin chicken keeping again today after a bit of a bad year last year..all the girls dropped off one by one and never really did find out what was up with them hopefully the winter will have killed off possible bugs in the ground, we have a new coop (solway) and i have dug out the run..i hope ...
