Re: Urgent help please, blood around rear endThanks so much for all your good wishes... you really are such lovely people. I suppose the strangest thing was the speed of everything, usually they go on forever even when they’re poorly! I’m now down to one though and my next local rescue isn’t until the beginning of September so if anyone is awa...
Re: Urgent help please, blood around rear endJust got back from the vets with an empty box . It was a prolapse, but not good, so best thing. She didn’t deserve any more pain. She had a lovely year free ranging in my garden. Such a sweet girl. Gutted.
Thanks so much for your replies, you are so kind xx
Re: Urgent help please, blood around rear endJust managed to have a good look, there’s just what can be described as ‘inards’ coming out. I think I’d better get her to a vet, not looking good. Thanks for your reply though, it’s very comforting to ‘speak’ to someone.
Re: Urgent help please, blood around rear endHi Karen, thank you so much for your reply. I think there is a good chance she has been pecked. It’s hard to see now as the wet feathers are hanging down. There’s urates coming out too. I think I need to dry her off a bit with some tissue so I can see what’s going on. If it is a prolapse, I’ve seen ...
Urgent help please, blood around rear endSorry, in a bit of a panic. Just found Dee hunched in coop, fresh blood around her rear end. I’ve taken her out and bathed her in a bowl of warm water to get a better idea of what I’m dealing with. Had rescues for years but, luckily, not experienced prolapse or this before. I managed to clear up a l...

Re: What is this thing I keep finding in their poop? Thanks for your replies. I think you may be right and it's the egg sac from the ones they ate. They haven't laid for a few days and no sign of this weird thing so that makes good sense, thanks. I tried looking it up but couldn't find anything on it at all, just laying softies. Cassie's not so good t...
What is this thing I keep finding in their poop?Hi all! Not been here in ages so lovely to see the best chicken advice line ever is still going! I'm hoping someone can help as I've never seen this in the 7 years I've been keeping chickens! Ive got two ex-batties and I keep finding what I can only describe as a totally empty, shrivelled egg sack i...
Re: Chicken Proof GrassSorry chaps but without wanting to do a ner-ner-n-ner ner, I have grass and chookies, but I do only have 4 (was 5 till recently) and the garden is about the size of half a tennis court, I'd say. I also have trees at the back which make it quite dry so I do a fair bit to keep it. Have a look online f...
Re: No more mrs nice guy!!!Yay!! I would definitely see that as a victory!!
Re: No more mrs nice guy!!!I'm sorry but it's so funny that one little red-faced smilie (or not) can convey so well the feelings of those who placed it there...
Good luck
Chooks eating eggs... is it ok?Susan, one of my exbatties is laying softies at the moment and so I am giving her limestone flour in porridge to try and get some calcium into her. However, she has been laying one every other day for a couple of weeks now and I'm worried she will get poorly, but also she is eating the egg each time...
Re: RIP Mavis - our first ex-batt to goSo sorry to hear about your girlie but it was definitely her time to go. Sending you and your other girls big
Re: Got a poorly hen againOh gosh, so sorry you lost your girl but at least she's not suffering. Sending you big
Re: Poor Layer has sour crop again... The right decision? Thanks so much Manda! I'll try tomatoes... should I give her a little bit daily, say one cherry type, or less frequently? Also, gross I know, but do you have any good tips on emptying the crop? ie. turning her upside down? I have done it to her in the past and been successful but whether it's anothe...
