Re: Compost heaps

No, I'm the fool who turns it regularly, and then I have trouble because the chooks want to come over and root through it!

Thanks for your support. I'll tell my wife with great relish that in this instance she is WRONG! and I don't get to that often.

Compost heaps

Please help settle a deabte in our house.

Should you jump up and down on your compost heap and compact it, or should you let it stay loose and aired??

All replies gratefully received.

Re: Well, I'll get strung up mentioning THIS!

Saint Spoon, you're absolutely right!

The thing about celeb shows, reality TV, even sport - it's so cheap and easy for TV to do! None of that awkward script-writing, rehearsals, staging, OBs and all the paraphanelia, just point the camera and shoot.

Cheap TV for a cheap age.

Re: Genius of Britain

Yes I watched and agree with you, they tried to cover too much. But very enjoyable and it goes to show what I have believed for ages - great breakthroughs usually come from some humble person with a good idea working away by themselves and without much support. I don't know why this country has prod...

Rough eggs!

For a couple of days now, one of our girls has been laying eggs with a very rough shell, like quite harsh sandpaper. Apart from me thinking that that must make her eyes water, they have been fine to eat.

Does this mean anything? Should we be worried? Any advice gratefully accepted.

Re: Cars, a luxury or necessity?

All this nonsense about the school run. "We have to do it because, you know, it's just not safe to let children walk the streets by themselves". Right, but the main reason is - THE AMOUNT OF CARS OF THE ROADS!!!!, and the school-run cars are amongst the worst offenders, parking dangerously...

Re: Cars, a luxury or necessity?

Breakasway is so right, many people only have a vehicle as a status symbol. If they are that unsure of themselves, have a fragile ego, well I suppose I should be compassionate. But I'm not because they are spoiling all our environment! Basically, children should walk/make their own way to school. I ...

Re: Cars, a luxury or necessity?

I certainly understand how many people are stuck with having to own a car due to their location. But.....we moved last year and one of the main criteria for our new house was that it had to be within walking distance of a station, and shops. About a mile away from us is Ditchling, one of the prettie...

Re: Silly question......

Worms! I never thought of that. Thanks Stace for that thought and thanks Manda for you re-assurance about disturbance.

But in fact, we had today one half-egg, incomplete, which tells us that one of the girls is about to go off lay. The other eggs were just fine, maybe that's it.

Re: Silly question......

Agreed, Grannyof4, no matter how many times I ask them, they won't initial their egss!

But, another point I left out. Not only is this egg white, it has a roughish surface unlike the nice smooth shells we have been used to.

Does that mean anything?

Silly question......

This really does sound like a silly question to me, but my missus says I have to put it to you.

For the first time ever, one of our hens has laid a perfectly white egg.

Does this mean anything?

Re: teacher spreading their own veiws

Diificult one, it depends on how the teacher put it. As an ex-teacher I used to make very clear what were my own views. I taught secondary pupils and was very often pressed for opinions from the children and that could be an interesting intervention for a wider discussion. But brainwashing - no, no....

My awful garden!

Really need advice here please. We moved to this house in Suusex last June, so we haven't had a full year here yet. The garden is on clay. There is blight in the soil which damages tomatoes and potatoes. There is honey fungus down one side which has written off the fruit trees we wanted to plant. Th...
