Re: Never ever again

Runny jam is brilliant!!!!! My wife is Russian and has got me into the Russian habit of having a couple of teaspoons of runny jam instead of sugar with my tea. Just put the jam onto a saucer and every now and then take a bit on a teaspoon before drinking the tea. I used to be a terrible sugar addict...

Re: trying to find

I get mine from either Jumble sales or car boots for a few pence each. I prefer them well made and "seasoned", rather than the new flimsy ones.

I am getting quite a collection of "Talla Ware", but I doubt whether anyone here is old enough to remember the brand.

Re: A Bloke Thing

It looks brilliant, but out of sight were the electricity company, cable and water board "unzipping" it.

Frugal Websites

If it will help any "Down the Laners", here is a short list of links to the frugal websites we use. Hope they help. The first and most important has to be http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com This one has saved us hundreds of pounds. The rest include some American sites, but they are worth ...

Re: Brake pads

In my younger days I used to work in a garage and "siezed" brakes were a common occurance because we were in an area which has an ageing population. The usual senario was that the car was left for a week and when the owner tried to drive it the brakes were "siezed on". Our boss w...

Re: Bacon sandwich - brown or red sauce?

A bacon sandwich is perfect as it is!

If you need a sauce, it must be the cheapest brown sauce, but not for the bacon sandwich, but to clean your brass and copper!

Re: HELP COMPUTER PROBLEM

Hi Maggie, I know it may seem strange, but it is most likely an intermittent fault and not a terminal failure. The bios beep and the monitor are the giveaways. If I were you I would get it changed before it gives up the ghost when you are in the middle of doing something important (sod's first law o...

Re: HELP COMPUTER PROBLEM

Hi Maggie, The beeps, or lack of them, is how the computer tells you what is wrong with it. 1 long beep on an IBM compatible PC usually means that the power supply is not workuing properly. This is also evidenced by your monitor going into RGB mode as it has nothing attached giving it a signal to di...

Re: 10p power saving light bulbs!

They may be cheap for power saving bulbs, but for better long term savings consider changing to LEDs instead. They are a good deal more expensive to buy than ordinary bulbs, but last forever, theit wattage is minute for the same amount of light so their running cost is neglegable. Check on ebay. Nick

Re: Wiring

Hi Helen, If I was nearer to you I would pop round and do it because it is such a simple task, but I am down in darkest Cornwall. Is there a competent Laner nearer to you who could help? It shouldn't take more than half an hour, including picking all the bits of snipped off wire, bits of plaster, et...

Re: Wiring

Helen, Please, please get an electrician. It will not be the shock that hurts, but the falling off the ladder afterwards! Don't you have a few eyelashes you could flutter? Soryy to allthose femiists, but needs must. There are not too many of us left, and it would be a shame to loose one to such a si...

Re: car/van renewal insurance

We renewd this year and saved almost 50%.

I was quoted £249 to renew my little Saxo with Churchill. Instead I went through a cashback site to Hastings Direct and got exactly the same cover for £146!

I also used the same site for the AA and got 1 year, any vehicle for £14!

Hi,

Look up "hay box cookery", its the same thing, but less expensive. You will find references to it in WWII Kitchen Front literature.

Re: Roofing materials

If anyone wants cheap/free waterproof roofing material for poultry/rabbit houses, see your local supermarket and ask if you can have the plastic advertising banners when they are no longer necessary. Just nail them on like roofing felt, clean side up of course unless they are paying you for the adve...
