Re: Muddy hens! Okay to put them to bed damp, or not? We're in the 2nd week of introducing 2 new hens to our 3. Today we had horizontal rain for a couple of hours. One of the newbies has gotten completely soaked, poor thing was looking pretty sorry for itself so I picked her up and put her in the coop thinking she'd be out of the wind. About half hour ...
Re: IdentifyWe are in the process of introducing 2 new chickens a Rhode Rock and one that looks identical to this. I'm not 100% sure what it is either, I hoping its a light Sussex. It does have a couple of black specs around it's neck. Looking at some pictures of broiler chickens they're legs seem a slightly ye...
Re: Drinker problemsWe have the same drinker with the same problem. What I have done is use a patio slab on top of a couple of bricks and hung the drinker just so it's floating above the slab. It's high enough so dirt doesn't get flicked into it too badly by the chickens and so they can still reach it easily. The probl...
Re: Reinforcing flat pack Coop and RunOn our ebay purchased coop and run I found the bolts easy to rattle open, you can get some that have a sprung ball-bearing that prevents them from being rattled open. The door to the coop on ours had a wooden flip around latch I replaced this with another bolt. I've mounted our coop/run on bricks ce...
Re: Catch the chickenOurs are pretty easy to catch, and even easier for them to escape their run when the doors open as your filling their food/water! I find if you put your hand over them they'll squat down and freeze, we can then pick them up quite easily. I think they will only squat down once they have started to la...
Re: Pale yolkWe feed ours primarily mole valley layer pellets too, with a hand full of corn between 3 chickens in the afternoon. Our girls go mad for dandilion flowers so they often get a hand full picked and put in for them which they go absolutely mad over! wonder if this helps with their Carotenoids? Our yolk...
Re: Quadruple yolk egg!!!!!!!!!Can't wait to see the pic's... We had a double yoker a few days ago
Re: WormingI guess it's healthier for the birds not to have them. Verm-x I use you just put in their drinking water, not had the chickens long but it cleared up the problem, will now treat once a month to keep they free. Verm-x is herbal, no egg withdrawal.
Re: Thank you ALAnd thanks from me and my son who kept asking to see the cam, both enjoyed watching and the updates on their progress
Re: Could she be a boy? From keeping quails I think the female vent would foam if squeezed, hope I have that the right way round and I don't know if that's the same for chickens... But we did have a few males we thought were females... Some breads you can tell by the length of feathers, compare 2 rows if the length is diff...
Re: WormingI'm still new to chicken keeping but I used verm x in their water, it worked for us and no egg withdraw. Just add to their water once a month, other products last longer 6 months I think but this was just easy to do.
Re: Sneezing chickenImprovements seen now so looks like the antibiotics have done the trick.. Both the black tails have been laying but I don't think the Shaver Brown has yet but could be wrong of course. The shaver brown does seem a little bit down still but early days, haven't noticed her sneezing today.
Re: Would anyone like front row seat for this weekends hatching? Ofcours you can watch, all welcome Sarah your right that one is working hard to get out. You might want to give m" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; a try... Rather than using your bandwidth it'll run one stream from you and then multiple streams out from their servers rather ...
Re: Would anyone like front row seat for this weekends hatching?Well done with the webcam... keep checking in to see if there is any action. It's years since I hatched some quails when I was about 14? lol more years ago than I was old... Been looking at a 3 egg incubator, I know my son would love it but it's convincing the other half....
