Re: Pekin bantams

I've kept pekin bantams with orpingtons and ex batts and they've all got along fine )t' I've been fortunate with mine though as I'm aware that sometimes the bigger hens can bully the little ones, so be aware. Pekins are lovely little creatures though - they each have their own characters.

Attacking cockerel!

Hi, Our little pekin bantam cockerel has started to attack us when we go near him! He's about 3 years old and has been friendly towards us until now. Fortunately we have always had trousers or welly boots on so he hasn't hurt us yet, but he flies at our legs and throws his feet in our direction. He ...

How long do chickens live for?

Hi, I was wondering - on average how long do chickens tend to live for? I know it depends on breed etc. I have a pekin bantam that is almost 7 years and still laying well. The other 4 pekin bantams she came with died when they were around 2/3/4 years. Other breeds I have had e.g. black rocks have on...

Re: Milk?

Ah, okay I won't give them any. Thought it may be good for calcium but expect oyster shell would be better?

Milk?

Hi there,

Just a quick question - is it okay for chickens to have a little milk to drink?

Thanks.

Ex-Battery hens feathers?

Hi, I have had my two ex-battery hens for over 2 months now. They are lovely girls and so freindly. They are over 1 year old and came to us in a very 'good' state. They were feathered, but a little scruffy with a couple of less feathered patches. I'm a little concerned as their feathers don't seem t...

Re: Poorly Ex-Battery Hen

Hi Lisa, Thanks so much for that, thinking about it there have been a few softies in the hen house recently. She perked up yesterday evening and seems better today, not hunched at all and quite bright. Hopefully it was just another softie and she'll be fine. I'll let you know if she seems poorly aga...

Poorly Ex-Battery Hen

Hi, Unfortunately, today I have noticed one of our ex-battery hens is poorly. We have had her for over a month and she has been one of the perkiest and greediest girls! She's just over a year old. Today she is sitting hunched, passing whiteish watery faeces and not eating corn - her favourite treat....

Re: Sneezing cockerel?

Hi,

Thanks, it sounds like my cockerel must have an infection. Will have to take him to the vet.

Thank you!

Re: Sneezing cockerel?

Hi,

Whilst I've ben around him, there haven't been any gurgling noises. He is still making the funny sneezing sounds today. On close inspection, he does have some dried nasal discharge. Shall I take him to the vet yet?
