Re: 1 girl, 1 boy... I think

I saw him sizing up to one of the other boys (pekins) yesterday and doing that guy thing where they try and karate kick each other. I was hoping they'd all just live peacefully together, but I suppose that was too much to ask!

PS Kitla, some nice creative names there! :-D

1 girl, 1 boy... I think

I think I'm right in saying I have one of each of these bearded silkie bantams? The one with the bigger wattles is also much bigger than the other, and is more aggressive towards the others in the flock. But, I haven't heard any crowing yet at 14 weeks old. Thoughts? Girl? https://farm5.staticflickr...

Re: Crowing already!

The boys are definitely the tamest ones! Especially that one, he's very bold. I have 6 chicks altogether - 4 Pekins and 2 bearded slikies. 3 of the Pekins are boys, and I suspect 1 of the silkies. That's going by behaviour more than appearance though (I know silkies are hard to s.ex). One 'chest bum...

Crowing already!

My little 6 1/2 week old bantam chicks are getting quite big now, but I was still surprised this morning to hear what sounded like strangled cries of pain coming from downstairs (they live in the sitting room for the moment). I ran downstairs expecting some terrible scene, but instead found Hopalong...

Re: Introducing a single chook

It's funny, I was most worried about the two little bantams in with the others when I first introduced them all, but they used to stick up for themselves no bother! They were feisty little balls of fluff, and would launch themselves full into the face of anyone who got too close. The legbars on the ...

Introducing a single chook

This is a similar question to the one posted in the thread below regarding rehoming 2 chickens together. I had 5 chickens - a rescue hen, 2 cream legbars, and 2 pekin bantams. Last Sunday I lost one of the little bantams (details in Buzzard thread). I got her and her sister (along with the legbars) ...

Re: Buzzards

I've been building a new walk-in run for my chooks since my makeshift tarpaulin shelter blew away. Last Sunday I took away the old fence and moved the run into place, but had to go out in the afternoon. I didn't secure them very well and they got out while I was away. I came home to feathers everywh...

Cheap polytunnels

I notice one or two of you on the facebook group saying you're getting cheap polytunnels to keep your chooks under cover till this bird flu thing's over. Any recommendations? My girls are in an electric fenced enclosure under trees, and without building something from scratch I don't know what else ...

Re: Newbies :)

They're getting on pretty well together and are now putting themselves to bed at night. I got a new little feeder for the wee ones though because they're too light to open the treadle feeder! Question: how old do you think they look? They were listed as pullets (meaning under a year, right?), but th...

Re: Newbies :)

Well in the auction catalogue they're listed as Isabella pekins, but a google search of that colouring looks more like a creamy-blue colour. I thought partridge looks closer to the mark, except that their markings might be a little less distinct.

Newbies :)

I went to my first ever poultry auction yesterday and got some new friends for Featherduster. I've never been to any kind of auction before, so it was quite an experience (I lost the 2 silkies I was bidding on to Tilda Swinton of all people!!!!). In the end I came away with 2 cream legbars and 2 lit...

Re: Sick chook, any thoughts?

Thanks guys. It's the first time I've ever done that with an animal, so it was a bit weird. All I could think is that I could never cope with it if it ever happens to one of the cats. I can't imagine anything worse in the world. My biggest problem now is that Featherduster is all alone, but there's ...

Re: Sick chook, any thoughts?

She's gone . I took her in this evening after she didn't eat or eat anything all day and just continued to sit there sleeping. After it was done and I'd got her home, a lot of the gunk that was sitting on her lungs had drained out. There was a lot of it, she must have been miserable. I just wish I'd...
