Re: Hello all, been busy but had babies!

Tried everything with broody girls from ice botts to dunking, didn't work and it seemed like they were starving themselves to death. Hatching quail boys is no big issue, they don't crow and you can keep a few males in with a little band of females and their all happy. So I didn't have to worry about...

Re: What a day!

Mine were all adult rescues that had, had a hard time. At first, I thought they were lovely with us (it was just shock and they soon settled in and became beasts!) It's very hurtful isn't it? little devils. I just kept wrapping up well and letting them out to free range while I sat on a plastic chai...

Re: Is it time to write off this year?

Reassuring (if sad) to read it not just me who had a wash out this year... I worked so hard, planted all the seedlings, ordered (and moved 2 ton of top soil by myself) into the remaining raised beds that had none. A the seedling looked fantastic, healthy etc. Planted them out and we've been flooded ...

Sorry, I'm rubbish at taking pics and they were the size of a bumble bee and as fast as a Cheetah and it was all my son could do to keep a hold of one but: Here's a pic of a 4hr old (as far as we know) baby quail :)

Hello all, been busy but had babies!

Hello everyone. Long time no speak :) Just thought I would pop on here and let you know we had 2 very unexpected baby quails! Our Silkie and Pekin went broody together, I tried everything to get them off being broody but nothing worked. They were loosing weight and looked pitiful. I tried to get the...

Re: Are cats a problem?

The run is 6ft all but I would never have the dogs and hens out in the garden at same time anyway, that's why it's the cat that concerns me as he can't really be contained in the same way as you can a dog. As well as Black rocks I have little sebrights. My dog would eat the hens for sure if they got...

Are cats a problem?

Looking at damage today to the girls roof, after yesterdays gales I don't think the girls will be back in their usual run and coop in under a week. I'm going to need help fixing the roof so will have to wait on others being around etc. The girls are snug in my large wooden tool shed for now which is...

Re: Whats best at bedtime....

My little girls have taken 6 months to get a bedtime routine (no matter what I tried) and the same amount of time to learn to lay their eggs in the nest box. (night after night of going down with torches and trying to get them all in bed to no avail) Tried everything to get them to go to bed when th...

Re: Gales and coop = firewood :-(

I feel for you. Myself and my daughter were looking out the window at our run and at the back we could see a 40ft conifer bending virtually in half in the gales. Seconds later, our run roof blew clean off and wedged in a tall tree. It was made off heavy duty onduline roofing sheets and had a 10 ston...

Free to good home Guinea fowl pair

A few of you may know, I ended up with two rescue Guinea fowl, who I've had in living happily with the chickens. The pair are 6 months old/healthy and female is laying. I have a mix of chickens: pekins, sebrights, blackrock, whitstars etc. Have had no problem until now. Whilst the Guineas are gettin...

Re: Does anyone have quail?

No expert but...I've got 7 quail, 6 ladies and one male. Nope, wouldn't put then anywhere near the chickens or let them out to free range - they will fly off I would have thought and the chickens could easily kill them by accident or design. Mine live in a large two tier rabbit hutch with a ladder b...

Re: Prefer newspaper to straw

Funny, thought my girls were odd but tried all sorts as I noticed they just kick straw out the coop and don't seem to like it. They like a think layer of newspaper in the coop, which is easy for my to roll up and clean away to. So win-win :)

Lost one of the Polish girls yesterday...

One of my Polish girls seemed to have an eye infection so tried all the usual (salt water etc.) She seemed well apart from that but the eye got worse. Vet gave antibiotics etc. no change. Then one morning her face was totally out of shape and a large white mass could be seen protruding out of her ey...
