Re: heartbrokenI am so sorry about whats happened to Geraldine. Its happening quite often now, people helping themselves to other peoples hens. I am a bit puzzled as to why they took just one hen though ....after going to all that trouble, you would think they would take as many as they could carry. You are obvious...
Re: Donation for exbattsSorry about you losing your cat - but what a grand age!! Obviously well looked after.
Poor thing being weaned so early. I always keep mine until at least 8 weeks, and they are wormed and deflead before leaving too.
Re: Donation for exbattsI will not give my opinion of the RSP C of A - it would not make polite reading I am afraid. Yes, I am sure there are people who would give the birds a good home, but cannot afford the outlay......but it would not be fair to give them away to one person and charge another. To be honest, its not the ...
Re: Donation for exbattsI agree with Bluebell. The farmer has to be paid for the hens to begin with - some people have said to me they thought they would be given away. Volunteeres have to go into the farms to bring the hens out, and take them to various parts of the country, all using a lot of fuel to do so. If there are ...
Re: One of our girls is missingDo hope your hen returns, I have had them go off for a couple of days from free ranging in our field, and return safe. Is there any chance your hen has been scared, maybe by a cat, and is hiding? They go under sheds, in planters, stupid places, we may not even think to look. But, young foxes are on ...
Re: RED MITE CONTROL SPECIAL OFFER FROM WELLS POULTRYThank Richard. First time in all my years of hen keeping to have red mite, so this offer is ideal, and I ordered some.
Very quick delivery I must say!!
Re: Wanted single ex battery hen please! What a shame you are not nearer to me - had a couple of spares from last rescue, which are now free ranging happily with my hens, but I would have let your friend have one definitely.
Re: Collapsed!Sorry about the loss of your hen. You did all you could, but the hen must have been too ill.I always worry all the way back from the farm, that the hens will survive the journey, and then the next one to their new homes. Thankfully, we have never lost one on the way back. As I have said before, I ha...
Re: Hen Rehomers UKWe left the house at 4.30am this morning, fed and watered my many hens, and other livestock, and finally got in the house again at 11pm.
It was worth it though, when I saw all the lovely people arrive to collect their hens. Very tired now .......
Re: Red Mites aaggghhhYes, Wendy - we will have time for a quick hello and goodbye
Re: Red Mites aaggghhhI have a lot of hens, and can honestly say I have never had a red mite problem in all the years I have kept hens (35 years!). But this year I have red mites in my hen sheds. I am horrified. Having heard people go on about the problem and how to get of it, I now know how it feels. I am out every nigh...
Re: Shop keeper selling farm eggs.Years ago, we used to take a big basket of eggs twice a week to the village shop, all free range. They used to put 10p a dozen on them, and sold them all. No longer able to do it unfortunately, with all the rules and regulations. I sell mine from the gate, mixed sized for one price. No class A or st...
Re: preparing children for ex-battsCan I just say, that not all battery hens have no feathers. In fact, quite a lot look perfectly ok. Suppose it depends on where they come from. Just recently, I have had a few people ask where they can get some hens. I always suggest ex battery hens, but the replies range from "we want proper h...
Re: Lottie just died in my arms.....Sorry about Lottie. But, she has had a lovely life with you, and you have to think of that, and not be sad, although it must be hard for you. Having lots of hens (80 plus) many ex battery hens, I have lost some obviously. But because I have so many, it does not affect me in the same way as those of ...
Re: have i done the right thingSorry about your hen. It does sound like she was very ill, and probably the vet would have said she needed to be PTS. Our vet does not treat hens, so we take the decision ourselves, but I can understand how upset you are. I think had the vet confirmed how ill the hen was, you would be better about w...
