Re: Freecycle

Freecycle is truly fab, over the last 3 years we had had a cot, high chair, kids shoes, outdoor toys, slide, sandpit etc and recently with the little one arriving soon a toddler bed for my son so that we can re-use his cot bed, loads of baby clothes, blankets, etc. Have also got rid of lots too, a d...

Hello all Some advice please, have had one of those weeks!! The girls have had a week of Flub after discovering worms in one of the girls poo, one out of four has not laid for a fortnight so am presuming it was her. Worming question

I got my ex batts in June and wormed them when they arrived. Last week I noticed a tape worm (I think, long and moving) in one of the girls droppings so did a 3 day treatment of Vermex, was planning to worm them this month anyway. However yesterday I noticed that there was another live worm in the d...

Re: how to get hens to roost?

Thanks for your answers - and no I dont really have a problem with where they sleep other than they tend to lay early and, before I have a chance to poo pick, which of course I do 1st thing every morning. Have had many eggs covered in poo and I know you are not supposed to clean them, maybe I will t...

how to get hens to roost?

I have had my 4 ex batties since the beginning of June and they still insist on huddling in the nest box at night. Is there any way of encouraging them to use the roosting poles? On the days that I am late up (7am!) there have been occurances of egg laying on the soiled straw. Really hoping they wil...

Re: Droppings identification

In my understanding fox poo is quite dark and normally soft and sticky in texture, and very smelly. If this looks like currants could it be rabbits or maybe deer, if you are rural? Or maybe even rats if it is smaller than rabbit poo. I have found fox poo on my lawn several mornings since having hens...

Re: Pregnant! Advice please...

Many thanks for all your lovely comments and advice. I do think I need a long handled poo shovel and pan (not just cos I'm pregnant!). I had a doubly incontinent dog last time I was pregnant so I dont know what I am worried about really! I do use Aubiose already as I have a group of guinea pigs that...

Re: Pregnant! Advice please...

He was brilliant with our 1st baby, but not so hot on animal poo!! He will happily let them in and out and feed them but I think it will be up to me to do cleaning duties. I am happy to do this as always had a small menagerie, its more a health thing that I think my family are worried about.

Pregnant! Advice please...

Good morning. I have had my ex batts for one month now and we are getting along just fine. I have just found out that I am pregnant!! (with my 2nd). Now all my family are saying to me.." you'll have to get rid of the chickens now". Nonsense I say. I have started wearing rubber gloves for a...

Re: How much?

I too gave the first 1/2 dozen free to my neighbours, then put a note in with them saying if they would like to buy our eggs to donate to the food fund. They give what they think is fair, some give £1 others £1.50. My best sale so far was £3 for a dozen and my neighbour also paid my son (2 1/2 years...

What Not To Wear...

Well as a new chicken keeper I very quickly learned not to wear open toe'd shoes!! Then learnt to tie up my laces very firmly! Today I have learnt not to wear floral print clothing. I went to collect eggs this morning and got mobbed, 2 hens on my back and the other two hopping up and down to see wha...

Started with the coop which I got on ebay for a good price, but not nearly enough space for them to play. The new run is 12 foot x 10 foot and they are so happy ...

OK, so now I get it...

Now that my girls have room to run around I dont think I am ever going to get anything done again!! I have found myself sitting watching them in their run (in the rain) and time disappearing on me! They now have a trunk from a dead shrub which is full of bugs and two large plant pots that are full o...

What can I make to put in my run?

Do any of you have any ideas of things that would be easy to make to enhance my chicken run. I am hoping to knock together a roofed dust bath and some perches, I have a few pallets, and some lengths of wood left from building the run. Any ideas/instructions would be greatly appreciated. Please bear ...
