Re: foamy eye

My goodness, is this kid for real? Why doesn't he just get help from parents or friends and get the poor little creatures to the vets? It seems to me that he just doesn't take any notice of the sound advise given to him. If he wants to keep pets, he has to realise that he is responsible for any heal...

Tuna for chickens ?.....

I read recently on this forum about feeding your chickens with tuna fish, I am assuming that this is for the omega3 fish oil. I bought a cheap tin of tuna flakes for my girls, and after reading the label found that it was tuna in brine. I put the flakes in a small sieve and washed the brine out, and...

Chicken keeping.. Hazardous to health?.......

I knew that the little devils had it in for me. While I was building the run extension the other week, I didn't want to trip over a hen and cut my head off with the chop saw. So like any sane person I left them shut up in the old run while I was working. They complained non stop for an hour, and the...

Re: Chicken run construction

I'm afraid it's power tools for me, I have just completed a run extension and used a Tacwise 191 el electric nailer stapler that I bought for another project. It whacked in 25 mm staples with ease and only misfired if I hit a heavy knot. It cost me £39 at Agros last year, and is one of the best buys...

Check your coops and runs!!!!!..

Went out last night to check the coop/run, good job I did, as a flying garden chair had hit one of the mesh panels. The mesh had been put in slightly offset and the 1/2" T50 staples had only caught the mesh in about 6 places. I shoo'd the girls out of the run, did a quick poo pick and climbed i...

Re: Plucked up the courage

It is great watching them pootle. around the garden doing what chickens do best. But please be warned if you want to preserve certain parts of your garden please fence it off with wire. They will have cased the joint for all the best and tastiest morsels on their first foray out. As you go out to ch...

Re: The girls have moved in.....

Hi Colin, thanks for your kind words. When it comes to computers I am a bit of a techno moron. My son is an IT consultant who is working away in Edinburgh. When he gets back next weekend I will get him to set me up with a Flickr account and will post loads of piccies of my babies and their des res. ...

The girls have moved in.....

Out came the Sun, and dried up all the rain, and daft old Don Roberto was on the job again. Enough of poetry allready. Have cut out the wire between the 2 runs and Elly the Light Sussex was first in, she seemed quite impressed with the new run and gave it a big vote of approval, with a huge poo righ...

Isn't it just typical !!!!!

Bl**dy British weather. For the last 2 weeks I have been building a small extension for my girls. The coop that I bought stated HUGE! 8ft long coop, big enough for 4 hens. What it didn't say, was that the built in run was only 22 sq ft, big enough for only 2 hens. The girls free range in the back ga...

Re: When?

I wonder, are we related? I want every thing now as well. I tried to get my hens in early April this year and nobody In my small corner of North Wales had any stock to sell. I was told that with shows and competitions starting around that time, that I would be better waiting for a couple of months. ...

Re: 2 days, 2 thin shelled eggs?????

Thanks Lucy, I still get a bit panicky when things go wrong. I'm not too worried, as she checks out in all the other ways, and is perky and as noisy as ever. Thanks again. Cheerio me deario.......

2 days, 2 thin shelled eggs?????

Will's, (Willhemina) my bluebelle, has laid 2 thin shelled eggs in 2 days. I am a bit worried, because of all 4 of my girls, her egg shells are usually the strongest. They have a varied diet and have access to both grit and oyster shells at all times. Can anybody advise, should I give them lime ston...

Re: Finished Run Roof..

great idea Colin, I have nearly finished my new run extension and was toying with the idea of using corrugated plastic sheeting for the top, but thanks to your idea I can remove the blue tarp from my car boot and save a few bob. thanks my man.
