Re: HELP! V.sqidgey crop full of foul liquid

Live maggots are the best way to go with sour crop.
Its best to give them just before bedtime so that they can get to work overnight in the crop.
I do hope she is feeling better and also best to not give any yogurt.

Re: Eggbound Photos ( useful but graphic)

I hate to disagree with everyone but the hen in the picture was not laying internally. The masses that you see are infact cysts. They are oocyes still attached to the ovary that have filled with water that have become cysts. I can speak from experience as my darling ex batt daisy RIP had the same th...

Re: Very ill looking hen

This is gonna sound gross but get hubby to hold her while you open her beak and have a good ole whiff. If it smells bad it will be sourcrop. If it is then live white fishing maggots are the way to go. Not the coloured ones. Feed her some of these before she goes to bed, they will chomp through that ...

Re: Should eggs change colour?

As a rule yes the comb will get bigger and redder as she comes into lay.
Her face will also redden up quite a lot as well.

Re: Should eggs change colour?

The pigmentation can change but i cant remember why this happens I do know that it is not a sign of anything sinister though and happens quite a lot sometimes my girls lay plain ones and then speckledy ones and the shades of brown to cream can c...

Re: Very ill looking hen

Hi Meg it sounds like gapeworm to me, you will need some flubenvet for her. Have you felt her crop at all? Its important that she drinks so you may have to force her to if she wont drink for herself. Just push her beak down into the water and she will drink, she might complain about it but you must ...

Re: Ever Truely Free-range ?

Peahen i really feel for you losing so many to the darn fox I dont think that you can have a total free range system without spending huge amounts on electric fencing to keep mr fox out. with 2 acres to fence with electric netting would be impossible i should imagine. You are like me, i like my bird...

Re: ex-free range?

Thats a great post Jen. I totally agree, the ex batts can sometimes look a bit featherless but the majority of them have been quite well feathered of late. They are so rewarding to nurture back to fully feathered girls and they dont take long at this time of year to regrow any missing feathers. Rega...

Re: HRUK - 2nd May

I have got 2 myself which takes my total up to 13 (6 of which are disabled) One girl with a badly deformed beak(scissor beak) and a girl who has a neurological/nervous system problem. They are doing ...

Re: acv v citrocidal

I would go with citricidal personally.
Dosage....10 drops in 2 litres of water for at least 7 days. Refresh every day with new dosed water. Dont offer any plain water just the citricidal water.
Good luck.

Re: Bloated Chicken

It sounds like your girl has 'water belly' another word for ascites. With Eyp the bloating tends to be hard to the touch and not squidgy. There was someone on here who did have a hen who was given baytril and her swelling went down so there is hope. Metacam is useful as it is an anti inflammatory. B...

Re: Bum hanging out

Hi bigD You have done the right thing by poking her prolapse back in. If it pops out again, a smearing of pile cream (prep h) on it....make sure it is clean first(no poo) and push it back in. Hold it in for about 5 mins. The things to watch for now are.... If it pops out again and the other hens not...
