Re: Do you have a favourite ...

I know you shouldnt have favourites but Hettie is the favourite of my 3 chickens. She is the cheekiest and friendliest and is such a character! Very skinny even though she eats a lot! I also favour her because she used to be the top hen and is now the bottom hen and is sometimes bullied a bit.

Re: You can't beat .....

A lovely roast chicken Sunday lunch. This to me is the perfect comfort food and even though we live in Portugal I love to make this meal - sends me right back to my homeland )w(

Re: Chickens and Veg Patch just don't mix

Thanks to all for your replies. We did have a fence around the patch but they kept flying over it. We'll leave the veg to the chickens this summer but will try to make a higher fence later on in the year for the winter veg. They may have won the battle for now but they havent won the war :-D

Chickens and Veg Patch just don't mix

We had to make the decision yesterday to give up on our little vegetable patch in favour of our 3 lovely girls. It's a shame because I really enjoy growing my own produce but the chickens were constantly flying into the plot and eating everything and generally being chickens. It was causing too much...

Re: Eating for £1 per day.

Sorry but I don't believe it is possible to eat for £1 a day, certainly not long term, unless perhaps you grow your own vegetables and eat vegetarian meals

Re: Caterpillars

Thanks for your replies Lancashire Lass and Mo. I'll stop with the salt! The "eggs" on the caulis are black - could they be worm droppings do you think? It's hard enough to keep our 3 chickens out of the veg patch let alone the butterflies and the snails. On the whole I'm really pleased wi...

Caterpillars

Hello I am growing cauliflowers, broccoli and brussels sprouts in the veg patch at the moment. The cauliflowers and broccoli are coming along really well but I've noticed black eggs and snails on the fruit of the veg and I have been sprinkling rock salt directly onto the veg to try to kill them off....

Re: 1st egg

So mystery finally solved. I went to the pet shop yesterday to buy supplies and told the owner that they had already lain a egg. He was not at all surprised at this and said that they were 8 weeks old when I bought them! So that makes them 20 weeks after all!

I guessed they were a couple of weeks old at the time we bought them, and they are still quite small. Yes it was a big surprise!

1st egg

Yesterday on arriving home from work I went straight up to the run to let my 3 chicks out to free range. I noticed something orange in the run and on further inspection realised it was egg yolk and nextto it a soft egg shell. I was shocked because the chicks are only 14 weeks old by my calculations ...
