Re: Rhode Rocks - When will they start laying

The first egg finally arrived this afternoon. 18 weeks old. I knew something was afoot, she went all submissive to me this morning and accepted a stroke for the first time. The egg is rather long and thin and it has a line around the middle of it like it's a Kinder egg!

Re: Stuff not worth buying cheap.

I would agree that tea has to be a brand name, but I always shop around for the best deal. A penny or less per tea bag is all I will pay. Wilkinsons is best at the moment, with Typhoo tea bags at less than a penny a pop.

Re: Stuff not worth buying cheap.

Looks like the main difference of opinion here is regarding dishwasher tablets. I find Aldi or Lidl ones to be absolutely fine. The dishes come out clean and that's all I want. No reason to pay three times the price for 'posh' ones!

A cost of about 6 or 7 pence per tablet is the going price for us.

I'll certainly let you know how it goes, but I'm not sure when it will be. Just waiting for the donation of the shed from a friend.

Why does it need to be warm and cosy when the birds sleep on perches?

That's ok then Maggie, I'm not gonna paint it blue! )t'

Re: Sand

I was under the impression that it was illegal and that councils spend millions of pounds every year putting sand back on the beaches due to erosion but maybe only in certain areas... I don't think we have much problem with corrosion here Mad Chick. There's miles & miles of sand when the tide i...

Re: Sand

Are you thinking of using the sand inside the shed or out in the run? The sand will go inside the shed on a base of old lino. Everyone who uses this method raves about how great it is and how they would never go back. Apparently it is the best way to keep the smell down and is very easy to keep cle...

Sand in the hutch

In the not too distant future, I will be converting a shed for my chickens to live in. Having read a lot online about the virtues of using sand on the floor, I've decided to follow this route. Here in Cumbria, I am surrounded by beaches and dunes offering an infinite supply of sand. Most people seem...

I guess they could be. It was the breeder that I bought them off that told me they should start laying at 15 weeks too.

Not really Annie. The only change I have noticed in the last few days is they are making slightly more noise than before. Still very quiet, but they previously only made tiny squeeks like little chicks.

Rhode Rocks - When will they start laying

My new Rhode Rock chickens are about 15 weeks old now. Does anyone know at what age this variety usually start laying?

Re: Chicken run construction

A break in the weather today has given me time to attach the mesh. A staple gun has done the trick because it's only a temporary structure until I get a chance to make something more substantial. The main thing I have learned today is - don't do this job wearing a t-shirt. My arms are scratched to b...
