Re: Unknown predatorI've just had a look at your eglu run and the mesh looks really strong and fox proof, but also quite wide. I've been told that both a weasel and a stoat can get through one inch mesh and a mink or ferret don't need much more. I think it's surprising that we don't get more attacks from these creature...
Re: Feathers just not growing backI bought two point of lay Black Rocks a couple of years ago. They both had beautiful plumage and really stood out against my recently re-homed caged hens. One kept her fabulous feathers but the other started losing them after about 6 months and ended up looking like a battery hen for about 8 months....
Re: karen's chicken diaryHi Karen I'm having a diary catch up and just wrote you a post - the computer ate it. Wrote another - the internet went off. So now it's just a short message to say I'm sorry to hear about Remie. I hope you can celebrate the lovely life you gave her and have lots of snoozes in the sunshine with Tidd...
Re: Sandy's Pink LadiesGosh Sandy, your girls are keeping you busy as ever. I'm having a catch up on the diaries and inevitably there are losses recorded. I find it has got a little easier because I am really working on the ' we give them more love and care than they would have almost anywhere' mantra and even our girls w...
Re: preparations for the girls arrival on saturdaythere's flickr too. I'm not great at IT and couldn't understand photobucket (which everyone tells me is easy). Flickr worked for me but that might just have been good luck!
Re: Bridget's Mum's Fabulous FlockOh dear. Lots of dallying. I don't know where the time has gone. Very sadly I have to report a few losses - Portia, my precious queen chicken died at Christmas. She did it very well though - was her usual impudent self one day, a bit subdued the next and died the next. If you've got to go then that'...
Re: Beekeeping with FabindiaHi Michael Good to hear of your beekeeping experiences although I'm sorry about your winter loss. My one colony seems to have come through the winter well and still has about 4 bars of honey. The brood nest is really large and I see lots of orientation flights to I am assuming the queen is laying we...
Re: Beekeeping with FabindiaHi Beekeeper and ex Beekeeper Just thought I'd update on how my hives are doing. I originally had two colonies but one was a cast swarm which went queenless and I ended up combining it with my large colony. That seemed to go well and as far as I am aware there was no fighting. My next big event was ...
Re: Red Mite Erradication ExperimentHow interesting. I'll look forward to hearing how you get on. I've run wild with the blowtorch recently, followed up with diatom. Haven't seen any sign of the wee beasties since but no doubt there will have been egg survivors. The idea of a clean, white interior is more attractive than my scorched h...
How chickens breatheI vaguely knew that a chicken's method of breathing differed from that of a mammal. I knew about air sacs but I certainly didn't know everything in this BHWT article. Chickens are just amazing.

Re: Advice needed for newbie! Bullying situationHi How have you got on? I haven't got anything to add to the excellent advice here and although I believe that all chickens will get on eventually, sometimes it takes more space and time than you perhaps have available. I was having trouble integrating one new girl into an existing flock, but the ad...
Re: What hens lay the biggest eggs?Just realised that my largest egg laying chicken is the girl on the right. She has flown Rainbow Bridge now but will forever be the standard to which all my chickens should aspire. And I don't mean for the size of her eggs, I mean for her truly amazing personality and determination. Hats off to beau...
Re: What hens lay the biggest eggs? The record around here is 105g laid by an ISA Warren ex battery hen. She laid quite a few around this size, but by no means every time.
The biggest eggs I get at the moment are laid by a tiny Black Rock although I haven't weighed any.
Re: Why are your hens called that particular name?I have loved reading this post; such lovely names. I have 16 chickens but only named 3 of them myself. The whole family seems to suddenly be very chicken interested when new ones arrive and we've had some great names. Current ladies are: Portia - named because she and her mate Arabella looked so sno...
Re: Bridget's Mum's Fabulous FlockI know I sound daft but these 4 girls seem really special and I am extra pleased to watch them exploring in the great outdoors. They have totally changed the dynamic of the whole flock and pulled everyone together. Post by kitla » Yesterday, 22:22 It makes me want to get some more ex bats myself, bu...
