Re: Chick questions! No idea about the original question, but my chicks eat alsorts too. I have used very thick wood shavings (it's like bits of matchsticks) and that seems to work, but they still pick at any of the smaller bits. They are just daft!
Re: cockerel pros and consHi Mo. Charlie cockerel was killed by a fox last night, and I am gutted about it, he was loud (and once cock-a-doodle-doo'd right down my ear!) but he was a character, and I will miss his funny little ways. Depending on how many hens you have, they may get a bit irritated by an over-enthusiastic mal...
Re: How did the Fox get into your Chickens?we've had 2 attacks this week, the first was human error, as they hadn't been shut up properly at night, and then once he'd tasted blood, he was back for more. The next attack was more annoying, as we were on our guard. But it seems that the fox managed to open one of the bolts at the back of the ru...
Re: What a difference in 7 weeksI know what you mean, I've got some 7 week old CLB too - and they also have the cool hair. I'm almost hoping for an injury so I have an excuse to break out the gentian violet spray, and give them a proper punk makeover!
*Not really*
Re: thinking of hatch eggs ? helpIs your silkie broody? Personally, I would give her some china eggs to sit on, and then slip some day old (sexed chicks) under her after 21 days if she's still showing the motherly signs. As others have said, it would save you the problem of what to do with the boys, and would probably be a lot more...
Re: Free ranging, how safe? It's if you ever introduce new hens that you see them at their worst. Then they will bully if the low ranking hens haven't got room to get out of the away. Yours were all new girls together, so are more of a flock. Absolutely agree with Mo, mine all had a tiny space for ages (I too had one of those ...
Lord (or Lady?) WellingtonAppologies to anyone who has seen this on Facebook (I have been having problems with photobucket so couldn't post on here sooner!) and please excuse the messy picture (their run is not actually that dirty, just wet and muddy) but do you agree that this 7 week old Wellsummer is a roo? I've named him ...
Re: ADVICE REALLY Welcome to the forum and well done you for taking on so many little battered ones. I would leave it for a while. As their bones are very brittle when they come from the cages and the 'attentions' of randy cockerels may cause problems. I have heard of broken legs and once a broken back. So I would g...
Re: Free ranging, how safe?I've not read all the replies, so sorry if I'm repeating things that have already been said. There are no right or wrong answers to this one, and it totally comes down to what feels right for you (although it can be quite emotive, as we all care so much for our birds). Obviously free ranging is risk...
Re: Wet Hi, how did you get them to go to bed by themselfs ? Hi Bren, Welcome to the Lane, if you only bought your girls home yesterday, I would keep them confined to a run (attached to the coop) for at least a week, that will stop them from straying too far, they should go into the coop themselves when it...
Re: Chicken updateSo lovely to have you back with us Lisa! I think you're doing the right thing, It's what I'd do in your situation too. Your chicks are gorgeous, I've just put my older chicks outside too, I would have done it sooner, but the weather has been so dismal, I thought I'd better keep them in a bit longer!...
Re: Roosting in a rose bush! Thanks everyone... So glad the mental image of me getting to grips with the rose bush amused you all. Anyway, at about 8pm last night, I had a bit of a brainwave (well one was due, it is May after all!) I locked 3 of the hens into the small coop, and kept my eye on the rest (I had a feeling I knew w...
Re: Roosting in a rose bush! Thanks so much everyone! Annoyingly I have just given a load of chicken wire to a local sanctuary (I knew it would come in handy for something, but got so fed up of it always being in my way, and scraping myself on it's pointy ends!) Oh well, I'll nip out later and pick up some more. Ooh, although I...
Roosting in a rose bush! Ok, I'm not going to lie, I AM NOT HAPPY!!! One of my Point-of-Lay ladies has taken to roosting in a rose bush, right behind the coop in the most awkward to get to place possible, (not to mention the thorns!) They use the bush as a hidey hole/adventure playground type thing and it is such a help wi...
