My final post Winnie and Freda are now settled with Cats brood. After a fraught morning where everything went wrong, to see the two of them quite relaxed and enjoying the new pecking opportunities was lovely. No massive scraps, one small 'handbags' incident, but otherwise, all was peace and love Ca...

Thank you so much Manda, I really appreciate it! Cat, that sounds lovely, I do like the idea of them having lots going on around them! They are used to the dogs and cat here - we let them into the garden and they chase the dogs, sleep with the cat (they make a dust bath and the cat joins them), and ...

Hello, I posted a few weeks ago about my dilemma keeping two remaining hens: http://www.downthelane.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=53506 I took the advice given and have taken time to reassess, and although I would not 'get rid' of them, I do think it would be better for them to be rehomed. If th...

Thanks to everyone! I have decided to give myself some time - a month or so makes no difference, then I will (hopefully) have some better instinct for what to do for the best. I think losing Lydia threw me into a headless chicken routine I will update, but in the meantime, I really appreciate everyo...

When I had my first chicken put to sleep following a stroke, it was £14. Money well spent, considering chickens cost next to nothing to care for. How much were you quoted Dave?
Unfortunately, it is all part and parcel of owning any animal.

brilliant Mo! My husband just says 'well, it's up to you, I don't know, just do what you think is best' Less use than a chocolate fire guard! They would leave such a big gap in my life, but I need to be careful that I am not keeping them for purely selfish reasons. I really am trying to think of wha...

The problem is Mo, they are SO nice. I honestly think if I asked them to do the ironing and wash the cars at the same time, their response would be 'no bother' I of ten see their son, so will have a quick word. The problem is, I am trying to project 5 or so years into the future, no one knows how th...

Thanks Dom, They seem to be perfectly happy with the situation at the moment - they get lots of eggs from me, and always say 'yes, no bother' when i ask. However, they are getting on a bit in age and I don't want them to feel obliged to keep doing it in, say 5 or 6 years time. I know my perspective ...

I do feel for you - no matter which way they go, it is never easy. I lost my favourite yesterday. She was looking a bit 'off' on Friday, not very interested in anything, and died peacefully in a nesting box yesterday. On balance, Amber went the best way possible for her.....but not easy for you. Wha...

I am down to two chickens and don't know what to do for the best. We always had 4, but have lost some and replaced them along the way until now. My original chicken Lydia died, leaving two happy, healthy chickens. However, I am now thinking seriously about the future. We do go away for long weekends...
