Re: July Photo Competition - Post your pictures here..

This rose was bought for me by my OH many years ago, it's moved house with us-it's called 'Crazy for You'. It's done really well this year

Re: Poor Myrtle

Thanks Manda! I do have a ice packs but no dog crate. Only a cat carrier but not sure this would be big enough (she's only a little pekin)? However she's not moving anywhere anyway so maybe i could pop her in that? What do i do with the ice packs-presumably wrap them in a towel and sit her on them b...

Poor Myrtle

Hi Laners, Could really do with some of your invaluable advice....again!! I know broody girls seem to be a hot topic at the moment and i'm generally aware of how to deal with the situation (although this is my first experience of it) but i'm starting to worry about my little Myrtle. She started to g...

Re: Broody Bantams

I am by no means an expert but you could try removing your broodies a few times each day for them to eat and drink and this may also pacify your lonely hen for a while. Is the other hen laying? If so could you wait until all 3 have laid then remove the 2 broodies off the nests and shut the pop hole?...

Re: RIP Olive

He was only about 5" head to tail, not massive. He lived in a big glass bowl, alone for many years as I didn't want to introduce another fish that may have passed on disease. The cats would drink out of his bowl but never bothered him otherwise! He had a couple of close calls in life-ended up o...

RIP Olive

Im not sure that I would ordinarily be so ceremonious about a goldfish but I feel Olive deserves a proud farewell simply due to his grand old age! I won Olive in a plastic bag at a steam rally when I was 13. He moved out with me when I left home and has been with me ever since. I'm now 33 so by my r...

Re: Help Blacky doesn't look well

Hi Dominique, Could she be going through a moult-they can look and feel pretty awful, and growing new feathers back can take alot out of them. If a moult is a possibility then you could try and up her protein intake (mealworms, maggots [undied], tuna, cat food). Any other symptoms? Have they been wo...

Re: New chicken owner needing advise!

Mud is fine (and as redd_angel said, good fun for the girls) but it can get really boggy if it rains alot, so if you're thinking of a permanent run situation i would seriously consider roofing the area. As for putting in bark, it's not the best idea as bark can hold mould and spores that are not goo...

Re: Having the worst time

You know what, Skeksis is right. Ring the vets back, be assertive. It's no skin off their nose to write a prescription, it's basically money for them for no work. They've seen your hens and prescribed them AB's already so i can't see the big deal.

Re: Having the worst time

Oh dear Lisa, your vets do not sound helpful at all. I can't imagine how worms would be giving respiratory symptoms (unless it's gape worm but then wouldn't they displaying classic signs of that?). If they thought that was the problem why not tell you to worm them in the first place? I feel sooooo f...

Re: Having the worst time

Touch wood Lisa, so far they seem much quieter! When they do make their chickeny noises the volume is less, I guess just cos they're smaller! I think the problem started before when I stopped the old girls free ranging so this lot are confined to their run but they have loads of room! They seem very...
