New additions?

I've had my 4 black rocks for nearly 2 years. I'm extending the run this week and thinking of getting another 2 or 3 chickens. Any advice as to what would mix well - am I OK mixing point of lay with older birds? And could I get another breed - I was thinking maybe Speckedly. Or could I mix in 3 or 4...

Re: Run flooring.

I use woodchips too, and they have been great. Go for play grade woodchip, they don't go mouldy and last a long time

Reseeding run

Hi, my girls have an fenced outside run, which we are just in the process of extending. They have scratched all the grass off the existing run to bare soil. I was planning to fence a bit of the run off and reseed. Just wondered - are there any seed mixes that would be good to use - was wondering abo...

Re: Chicken snacks

Personally I prefer to keep treats to a bare minimum. I was advised by a chicken breeder to avoid rice, pasta and bread altogether. It makes sense to me to stick to foodstuffs that are as close as possible to the type of foods an animal might get in the wild - so greens, grubs etc are OK, but I pers...

Re: Egg Storage

I would never keep eggs in the fridge personally. If you do, one tip I have heard is to avoid the egg trays in fridge doors. Apparently the fluctuations in temperature from the door opening and closing is the worst thing. If you do keep them in the fridge, then keep them to the back, not in the door

Re: Water Consumption Query

we have 4 chickens and I tend to fill the 3L drinker up about half way and that has been more than plenty for them so far, so I'm sure there's nothing to worry about

Egg identification

When I first got my chickens I wondered how i would ever tell then apart. Unbelievable now, they are so distinctive I know who is who at a glance. And now they have all started laying, I can even tell by the eggs which one layed them! Goldie's eggs are slightly speckled with white, Jet lays the larg...

Chooks very vocal

Chickens are making an absolute racket today. They are usually quite quiet, but just been up to clean out the coop and they're making an almighty squawking noise. They keep going in and out of the coop, which they don't usually do. They are just coming into lay - have had my first 2 eggs over the la...
