Re: How to tell a hens age?

I did wonder why anyone would sell their birds at auction. And I was really upset about how they handled the boxes of chicks and ducklings. BTW I had no intention of buying a Trio. The hens and cockerels were all fully grown, which is what prompted my question. I have noticed that there are many few...

How to tell a hens age?

After much trawling of the internet and buying poultry mags looking for local(ish) breeders, it looks like I may have to resort to buying at a local poultry auction. Went had had a recce last weekend, and had some nice birds at reasonable prices. Mostly trios though, and wasn't planning on getting a...

Re: chicken house on ebay

How about making your own? I've been looking on ebay etc, but for around £50 I can build a 4ft x 3ft shiplap coop, which is what I'm going to do. And if you are unsure, there are some easy coop plans on the web.

Any knitters out there? Need some advice please

MY son and his girlfriend are about to set up home, and have fallen in love with knitted cushion covers. However, the ones they like from Next are £30 a pop, and they are only stocking stitch! So, I have offered to knit them some, but it's years since I knitted anything. So, can someone please tell ...

Re: Advice on sewing machines? {Also present pictures!}

I haven't read the whole thread, so forgive me if someone has already suggested this, but what about a vintage Singer? I have two, one model 66 hand wheel, which will sew through anything, and an old model 27 treadle. These old machines will last forever, if looked after, and they are also gorgeous....

Re: Fig tree question

I have 2, one in the open and the other in a greenhouse. I've restricted the roots on both of them, about 4ft x 2 ft, as this makes the plant produce more fruit than growth. The one in the GH is covered in ripening fruit. The one outside, against a trellis, struggles every year due to the cold winte...

Home made liquid feed, how much to dilute?

About 3 years ago I started making liquid feed by filling an old plastic dustbin with water and dumping weeds in. It must be quite rich by now, but I'm not sure how much to dilute it by. Anyone got any idea?

Re: Long awaited first strawberry

I've got 3 strawberry beds as I make loads of jam. My family can't get enough of it. Anyway, mine are just starting to ripen. I have to net them all or the blackbirds would die from overeating! Between them and the pigeons which eat all my cherries and anything them deem edible in the veg garden, I ...

Re: Pallets - they don't die easily!!!

I would love to have a lorry load of pallets delivered for free. Oh the uses I can come up with let alone the free fuel. Think I will have to look into this. Until this year, we had truck loads, about 60 pallets, delivered. The delivery man was paid to take them from some firm, and we gave him his ...

I absolutely love these, and would love to have a go but haven't found any nice vintage cutlery yet.

Re: A sad goodbye

So sorry to hear you had to give up your chooks. It's always heartbreaking when you have to say goodbye to a loved pet, whether it's a dog, cat or chicken. Please take comfort in the fact that your girls will help give city kids a glimpse of country life, something they may never have seen before. {hug}
