Re: Thinking of owning chickens

My Pekins are great Characters, but the can be very noisy throughout the day. It's the smallest that shouts the loudest! They lay pastel shelled eggs too, very pretty and more yolk than white which is how I like them.

Putting day olds under a Broody?

Our serial broody Pekin is at it again. I've been thinking though,I want some more Chickens so why not get some day olds to pop underneath her,or will this only make the recurrent Broodiness worse? I tried last year ( 5 times!) to break her of it,no joy she just snaps herself out of it eventually. A...

I have a small greenhouse to put them in. I've got a few other things to sow straight outside too. It's all a learning curve :-D

I've taken the plunge

into growing my own food. I have Cucumber,Cabbage,Butternut Squash and French Beans all germinating on the Kitchen Window. The Potatoes are in outside too. As soon as I have relocated the Chickens to another part of the Garden the area where they were is being turned into raised beds by reusing my o...

Re: New Venture

Exciting! I'm looking forward to reading about your adventures . I know of two fields in the village to rent for £20 a months (my friend kept horses there previously) there is water but no electric, plus there is a fox den at the bottom corner so although I'm very tempted because of the price I know ...

Re: Cockerels?

Thank you Aspasia,my immediate neighbours never give me donations for Eggs nor do they know anyone else does I've never had complaints about the noise and I've never seen a rat (we used to see a lot when the kept Pigeons at the back of us) I am very careful to keep every where clean and get the food...

Re: Cockerels?

I know :(and I'm a bit worried about what to do now. I'm the sort of person that would rather handle these things by the book and come clean that we already have them-but what if they made me get rid of my girls I'd be devastated. Maybe I should wait until they are in the shed, the sheds always been ...
