Re: The Great Egg's Chicken Adventures

It has been a busy time here with lots of outdoor projects keeping me away from addictive chicken forums! The girls have happily been getting stuck in with 'helping'. Catrina is pretty tame now with me at least - she does have a healthy wariness of children which is ok with me as I have lots of youn...

Re: Chickens sleeping in nest box

I have accepted that the nest box is a dormitory for the hybrids, the silkies are still snuggling on the floor of the coop. Thinking about putting a box of auboise on the floor for them as I use zeolite on the coop floor which isn't very comfy! No eggs as of yet, no idea when they may arrive!

Re: The Great Egg's Chicken Adventures

Chicken mutiny today!! My son left the back gate open this afternoon and I was there to witness all five ladies walking happily down the drive away from the house. We do live on a very seldom used lane, so cars not an issue luckily. I got the others back in after a while, but Ms. Melson decided she ...

Can't wait to see what you build! I built my chicken run and adapted my coop. I got a circular saw for Mother's Day so I'm on a bit of a roll now - in my sights is playhouse renovation! {rofwl} I love your coop!

Re: The Great Egg's Chicken Adventures

Yes Sandy, I've been lurking for ages on here. I've wanted chickens for years!! The chickens continue to get more comfortable in their new home. They now crane to see who is coming out the back door and rush to the run door if they see me coming down the garden. It has been a bit rainy here, so not ...

Re: The Great Egg's Chicken Adventures

Mo, I have no idea how old they are. I bought them Point-of-Lay and didn't think to ask how many weeks they were. My plan for knowing when they are ready to lay is to find eggs! Catrina is very black and white - a striking bird. All of them at the breeders were that way, really nice looking birds! M...

Re: Chickens sleeping in nest box

Ha ha! Consensus seems to be let them get on with it then! They'll be pleased to know I am enjoying it, very much. I'm finding the trickiest part trying to get a couple of peaceful moments with them without my kids wanting to be right in there too! My four year old has taken to opening up the pop ho...

The Great Egg's Chicken Adventures

How exciting to finally be starting my own diary after reading everyone else's! I have had my chickens for a week now and all is going well. A bit about the chickens so far: Daisy is a white silkie and is head chicken lady. She also seems to be the least gifted intellectually She is the last to lear...

Chickens sleeping in nest box

Any advice on this? I've only had the chickens for a week - noticed they slept in the nest box the first night so I've had the next boxes blocked up (none are laying yet) for the last week. Took the boxes out today to do a deep clean and the big girls are all in the nest box tonight (silkies can't g...

Re: Achieving chickendom! (pics)

Thank you all for the coop compliments - I did work very hard and am quite pleased with how it has all turned out! The girls have had a nice day - lovely weather and lots of treats Little Annabelle has started taking treats out of my hand, she is such a sweet little thing. All but Daisy put themselv...

Re: Achieving chickendom! (pics)

Thank you everyone, I did work really hard on the coop and run. Already I can see that there are things that need adjusting - such as needing a shelf to put tea on! I will keep an eye on the table, so far no one has ventured up yet. I'm loathe to get rid just yet as it does provide some shelter and ...
