Re: She thinks she is a cockerelI had a Bluebell who laid eggs for the first year, then had a moult, and decided she was deffo a he! She actually used to cock-a-doodle-do several times a day. I guess is lasted about a month(ish) until all her feathers grew back, then she remembered she was a she after all! Where I have got my hors...
Re: My battle against Rats (cunning plan) !!When I first got my hens, I had Mr Ratty move in quite quickly. I spotted their rat run the day after they arrived, so stuck a load of stinky ferret poo down the hole, and they just vanished. In March, the couple who rented the house next door knocked to say they had rats under their wooden shed (wh...
Re: Pest Expert . comDo you know anybody with any ferrets? When I first got my girls, we had a few rats visiting, and someone told me to put ferret poo along the rat 'runs'. They went within 2 days! Poison always frightens me..all it takes is for a neighbours (if you have any) cat/dog to get a dying rat, and theres a wh...
Re: argh! another hen crowingI had this with a bluebelle, she went into moult after laying for a good year, then decided she was a he until her feathers grew back.
I felt I had to go round and apologise to my closest neighbours, assuring them that he was 100% a she! She went back to normal once her feathers grew back :)
Re: Wierd LumpNot as embarrasing as me taking my rabbit to the vets when I was young because I found two odd shaped lumps under him...only to be told they were his testicles
Re: Pheasant VisitorAt the farm where I keep my pony, they had a hen that did 'the deed' with a passing male pheasant..the outcome was a beautiful batch of chicks, very dark with a stunning green shimmer to them. Mr pheasant hung around for a few days, then went on his way. So it's not only the extra bugs you have to t...
Re: Red mite fumerI was looking at these, and wondered how long you have to keep the girls away for? My wooden hen house is in my walk in run, so they would still be fairly close to the house after it was detonated lol
Re: Riiight, boy or girl?Right, might as well get the next two checked as well I guess...two RIR, about 14 weeks old now?
Hit me with it ladies and gents!!
Re: Riiight, boy or girl?Big oooopsi lol I was sat in my lounge at the front of the house, with the windows and back door shut, plus the TV on, and I could still hear him this morning! Going to have a word with the farmer if he can take this one as well, obviously keep him with his own 'ladies' seperately from the other one...
Re: Riiight, boy or girl?Oh..my..god.
I could understand the other one, because it looked different comb-wise and its tail, I even googled pictures of young legbar cockerals, and tufty feathers on its head matched the photos on there! I only wanted chooks that would lay blue eggs for goodness sake :-(
Riiight, boy or girl?I bought two young cream legbars, being told they were both female, I trusted the lady.. Within about a month, one was attempting to do the cockeral noise, he had what looked like half a comb on his head, with tufty feathers filling the gap where the rest of the comb would be..his tail feathers were...
Re: Found the egg eating culprit!lol don't panic, that would be the absolute last resort! So far *touches wood* I haven't found any broken eggs over the last few days, that was with raising the nest boxes...but to be honest, I've only had one egg in that time as they are all moulting! But anyway, the egg was in one piece, so will s...
Re: Found the egg eating culprit!Lovely stuff ladies, and thank you for the welcome back Mad Chick :D
Best go and buy some mustard then, seeing as nobody in the house likes it lol Will also raise the nest boxes, they are just plastic storage boxes on the floor at the min.
Found the egg eating culprit!Ive been finding a lot of empty shells laying about in the nesting boxes over the last couple of months, but with 11 girls, it was hard to pinpoint who was doing the deed....until this morning! I found my Black Rock happily pecking away at a freshly laid egg, so the question now is, what do I do wit...
Re: Chicken trying to cock-a-doodle-do?Just looked in the shed and seems like shes moulting as well, so she must be a very confused chicken lol
