blue cedar

We've tried to start a new tree from our current giant blue cedar. this was bought as a broken sapling 25 years ago and is now enormous. We are moving soon - everything we've tried in the past has failed to start a new tree and we expect to have to buy a new sapling and start again. On the other han...

Re: Nearly ready and one final question.

Just a question re bedding from another newbie (still waiting to sign contract for new house which will have chickens as soon as I can sort everything out). I thought I read, somewhere on here, that only cross-cut shredded paper was OK to use with hens. If that's not the case, I think I may be able ...

Re: groundworks

Thank you very much - it certainly does. I now have an idea of the price and just need to find someone local to me. I've saved the website and will follow it up. I'm guessing that I could get a few jobs done in the day. Laying a trench through the garden to supply electricity to the garage, for exam...

Re: groundworks

Hi - thanks for the response. Yes, it's the cost of a little man with a little digger that I'm thinking of. There's an area of about 10ft x 60ft to dig out and level. Can't imagine hand digging - and as you say it would take forever.

groundworks

In this little wilderness that I've bought, there is an area that will need to be dug out and levelled in order to make a hardstanding for the garage and provide access to the rear of the garden. This will help with wheelbarrowing and chicke-related activities. We're not confident enough to hire a l...

Re: have bought a small wilderness

So much good advice already. Thanks. The trees will stay through this summer at least. I shall then think about pruning them back. One tree seems to be a laburnum- presumably I need to keep the chooks well away from it. I'm doing lots of planning. It's all I can do for now. The unexpected treasures ...

have bought a small wilderness

Been for a second visit to the new house. Mainly looking for a good site for the chickens we hope to get. Now that the rose tinted specs are off I can see that I should be worrying about the garden. Current owner (60ish female like myself) has a bad back and so nothing has been done to it for years....

Re: New to this!

I'm new, too. Joined the forum a couple of weeks ago. I can only plan at the moment - contract for the new house is at the solicitor's office now so we are making progress. This forum is remarkable. Most people seem to be broadly in agreement and I take from each answer that which seems to relate be...

Re: too much research

WOW - only posted my question this afternoon and look how many useful replies already!!! Thanks to everyone who has helped me to regain a sense of perspective. I've overdosed on info because it's all I can do at the moment - it will be three months before we get the keys and make the boundaries chic...

too much research

As a newbie (getting chicks on move to new house) I think I've done too much reading on here. I think I'm OK with housing, layers pellets, etc. But when it comes to little treats or not wasting potentially valuable "stuff" I am confused. Am I right in the following: Green veg trimmings (ra...

Re: Getting soooo excited

Hi I'm a newbie - semi-retired but moving to the country in a couple of months. Chickens - here I come! My handyman is building my run - and he's already told me that I should work on the assumption that if I start with 5 I'll have 15 by this time next year! Enjoy the retirement - I too am working a...
