Hi Emma,

Just replying to this so as to get the post 'up top'.

Personally I haven't a clue I'm afraid.

Hoping someone may know?

Cheers, Richard

Hello, I wish there were an answer, but beside really covering them up, can't see a solution. I feed my chickens mainly under cover now and that seems to keep out all but sparrows and robins, but I 'allow' them. As my ginger cat has been chased off by a magpie..... that's not the answer either! I as...

The musician coming out in you Verity!! Could be she's new, but sounds like she's just asking to get out. Maybe she'll settle down. On the neighbours issue, a lot of people rather take to the sound of 'country' etc. One of my neighbours actually said it would be good if I had a cockerel! I did once,...

It could be there's a fox or some other predator around. That's the noise they always make when there's 'a lurker'.

About the right time for it as well. If that were so, darkening the house wouldn't make much difference.

Otherwise she could be laying?

I don't think there's any time limit as such, but on roasting say once a week, yoiu're safe enough. In the winter, we have the Rayburn on from about 5pm - 7am and there's always some in there, thus some are more done than others. I would say they are ready when they just 'snap/crumble' and browning ...

My Black Rock is broody at present, has been for about 3 weeks now. She comes speeding out in the morning for some feed, as you say fluffed up, clucking. Then she eats, has a set to with a couple of others and goes back to bed for the day! Reminds me of someone I knew once! Every evening, I find fou...

Agreed.

You can also roast the used eggshells, crumble them and feed them with that.
There's no harm and it's common practice to do so.

I'm sure they'll soon settle down to a routine.

Hi Starbright, They don't make much noise really, unless there's a dog or something prowling around, then they just cluck for a bit. I'm pretty sure there's no law against having them so the Council would only interfere if there were a noise or smell issue raised by neighbours. Don't get a cockerel ...

Hi, I assume you've had a look at the Chicken Fencing page on Down the Lane. Wire mesh is good as long as 'the holes' aren't of a size that a fox can get it's jaws through to chew open. The only other real way (beside frugalily building something about 5 - 6 feet high, is electric fencing - which, i...
