Re: Baking without flour....?

Seems a very restrictive diet. Presumably pre farming no dairy either?
Is this based on the idea that we haven't evolved our digestive system to cope with new foods? But as omnivores we are surely like chickens and pigs- if it isn't poisonous we'll eat it. )eat(

Re: Baking without flour....?

I asked my hubby ( archaeologist) and he said Nuts and Berries but none of your modern hybrids like apples etc. And Mammoth may have been what they were drawing on cave walls 'cos thats what they wished to eat but in reality what most paleolithic people ate was Rats! and other small fry. You can use...

Re: What's with all the Greenfly??

There is a lot more aphid around this year and they have been sending up winged generations to spread around early this year. I think the ladybirds and lacewings must have been hit hard by the bad winter because I haven't seen many around. Hopefully they will catch up soon. Most insects are attracte...

Re: For itchy bites?

When we went on outings as kids mum always carried vinegar and a cut onion for wasp and bee stings. The theory being that one is an alkaline poison and one an acid. and the remedies neutralise them. Trouble is i can't remember which is which )old( .
Calamine is definitely good too.

Birds won't touch gooseberries? Don't be off your guard they are just waiting for them to be a bit sweeter. i once had three gooseberry bushes stripped bare overnight by blackbirds. Bet they got a tummy ache :)

Re: courgettes

I cut mine at 4 inches the younger the better. Cut them into sticks and eat raw with salad. Or slice thin and fry with bacon-yummy.
I once grew a loofa gourd. That climbed really tall. Got one loofa off it !

Re: courgettes

Most cougettes these days are the bush type and will just grow into a big clump. No need to do anything to support them. Were your stakes for holding up a cover earlier in the year Teddymouse?

Re: ANTS

Ants in the soil and compost is a personal thing, some people hate them but I don't mind. If you have ants in the lawn the red ones can be a nuisance as they bite and it can be quite painful especially for children. Ants on your plants is another matter. They are usually there because they are farmi...

Push a lolly stick into half a banana, freeze, dip into melted chocolate and enjoy. who wants to let the kids have all the fun :-D
The whole point of these bags is to stop the skins going black in the fridge so obviously the lakela one didn't have enough insulation!

Bananas

"Do not refrigerate Bananas" and then they get ripe too quickly, I hate over-ripe bananas and there is only so much banana cake you can make. I saw a Banana saver bag in the Lakela catalogue - insulates but allows to breathe. So i put three canvas money bags inside each other, put the bana...

Yes, always carry my garden tools in a workbag and even my garden knife in my handbag. Dad is never without his knife in his pocket, luckily he had his passport giving his occupation as gardener when he forgetfully still had it in his pocket at the airport . My hubby is an archaeologist, he often ca...

Re: Elderflower season

My very old original recipe for champagne said that the natural yeasts in the air would start it. If there was any there then it would start to ferment within a few days. I have never been able to get it to start like that, don't know if thats down to pollution or what but it is why I always add a r...
