Re: Raspberries Sorted

I've never taken cuttings from raspberries only cut off suckers that have grown away from the main plants while they are dormant and replanted them where I want them to grow.

Re: Red Mite Erradication Experiment

From my research it is perfectly safe once it has dried and obviously I won't let them paddle in it or drink it. It's made from limestone which they put in flour to help with soft egg shells. Once the paint was dry there was no problem rubbing against the walls even when they were wet after washing ...

Red Mite Erradication Experiment

I had a thought the other day (yes it was quite painful) when I was thinking back to my childhood on the farm. I remember one of our jobs being slapping white wash (limewash) all around the inside of the dairy, stys and chicken houses to keep things clean and healthy. We had to be a bit careful and ...

Re: Is clotted cream fermented?

I don't know about commercially produced clotted cream but if they just have an industrial version of the traditional method then I can't see that fermentation could happen. The traditional way is to pour whole milk into a wide shallow bowl and allow the cream to rise to the top over a 24 hour perio...

Re: Chutney (Update)

Opened the first jar today and it tasted really good so the delay in adding the sugar didn't seem to affect the taste although the extra heating to disolve the sugar has made it less chunky and a bit more puree like in texture.

Courgette Pickle Relish

As we have a glut of courgettes I've been trying different things to use them up. I found a recipe for a courgette pickle relish that is on the spicy side and apparently goes well with burgers etc. so I thought I'd give it a go. Made up two 1lb jars and popped them in the fridge to mature for a few ...

Raspberries Sorted

Just finished pruning all the fruited canes from the raspberry bed and clearing the weeds and rubbish from under the canes. There is a nice flush of new shoots for next year which I will need to start tying in but first I will have to sort out the wires. The posts have become a bit loose in the grou...

Re: Chutney (Update)

I have a confession to make. After posting about my chutney making exploits I was cleaning up when I noticed that I had neglected to add the demerara sugar to the mix. As a result I had to empty all the chutney back into the pan, heat and then add the sugar and stir it in before putting it back in t...

Re: Bills 2015 garden veggy diaries

I'm not yet eligable for 10% discount on a Wednesday I used tannalised 2"x9" to do mine but think this time I will go for 2"x8" as it knocks a few quid off. I guesstimate the new layout will about double my growing area as I will be using all of the area instead of 2/3 of it. At ...

Re: Chutney

This might be the only way that I would enjoy courgettes. I find that I cannot "get on" with them, or aubergines. Never mind, there's plenty of other stuff that I do like. A good tasty recipe for courgettes is four courgettes halved, seeds scooped out. Then mix up in a bowl 125g Ricotta c...

Re: Bills 2015 garden veggy diaries

Looking nice and lush, certainly better than ours All the wood on our raised beds blew in the last frost of the year, they lasted 12 years though, so just did the best we could and didn't bother putting too much compost on the remains of the beds which probably explains the lowish yields. Ali has co...
