Squirrels - obviously not a mission impossible

Post by bytheseaside »

I have a bird feeder outside the window hanging of the branch of a hazel tree - since the cold weather the squirrels have gnawed right through the branch and spread the nuts all over the ground.

I know it's cold but I think the squirrels have the mind set of beavers - has anyone else had this happen?

Aren't squirrels supposed to hibernate!!

I had this last year, but I don't put peanuts out now, just fat balls inside the feeders. The birds still get to them

On a light note, last year, I took the feeders down to clean them in the Kitchen and whilst doing so, got this......

Just to show how clever they are - and a relation of the rat of course.

I couldn't go out in garden last summer for fear of being attacked by the one that comes next door and vandalises all of their bird feeders, he was so angry when he wasn't getting peanuts as quick as he wanted that he had a hissy fit and yanked and pulled at the bird feeder, till the nuts all fell out. He was a right little vandal.

Last time I saw one of his buddies it was running into my neighbours house and up the stairs as we passed the front door. Soon came out followed by the gents big white cat! Honest they scare me!

Grey squirrels do not hibernate, but, our native red does. Greys eat birds eggs and chicks, breed like erm squirrels and are tree rats. Covered in fleas etc.

The pub where my son works will buy grey squirrels caught locally. One dish on the menu at the moment is Grey Squirrel pie.

They are such clever little things. I love squirrels - I know they are vermin but they are so cute. Sadly I dont get squirrels in my garden as I have 2 cats but there are squirrels all around me as im in quite a green area. At my last house I had a ceramic feeder but the clever boy learnt out how to undo the wingnut at the bottom to let all the nuts out.
