Bumble bees nest

Post by kitla »

We have a thriving & pretty busy bumblebee nest in our garden shed, I think
they are Bufftailed bees. They get in through a knott hole & dont bother us. Problem is, My hubbie wants to take down the old shed & build a workshed & was planning to do it next week when our builder friend is free, I'm trying to pursuade him to put it off till they're gone, I think it will be quite hard to get at, & there's no way I'll allow him to destroy them! Has anyone had to move a nest? if so how did you do it? and did they survive?

Bees are precious, I can see me standing infront of the shed, arms folded
singing "we shall be...we shall not be moved" )cowboy(

Hi Kitla .. you've got two options .. one ..leave alone till Sept or Oct when the colony will have finished or .. move it .. I'm a member of the BCT and they have produce this information about moving them .. not as scary as you might think as they don't swarm like wasps and honey bees. )t'

No I dont think the Ock method will work here - unless I could block up the
knott hole & Ock could pick up the whole shed (he looks a strong boy) &
move it to the other end of the garden!
Failing that, hubbie has now agread to delay his project till the bees have gone,
he was hoping for early August, but I dont think they're that species of bee.
I pulled out a bundle of muck that the bees have thrown out of the nest, into
the shed - on closer inspection its moss & stuff, I think its last years nest.

Interesting site Jannie, I've donated to them so I can get that lovely Bumblebee
poster. How can a bug be so cute!
