The Birds are back! The Birds are back!Because it has been so mild this winter the birds in our garden have shunned the feeders in favour of natural food, to the extent that I took most of the feeders down. Today however, they have decided that I am the better option. It has been lovely to see a huge variety of birds coming to feed - yes more feeders are out now. Has anyone else noticed this?
And also we have had loads of berries on our holly tree up until this week. Now most of them are gone. So that Old Wives' tale about berries after christmas meaning that there will be a cold snap coming is true! The birds obviously knew anyway Re: The Birds are back!Yes we have had a small flock of goldfinches down on the teasles by the pond today. Thay are so lovely. I always leave the teasles for them. I don't put out bird food since I got cats as it was just inviting trouble but in this weather the cats are inside all day anyway.
The robin gets away with pinching the girls feeder pellets. Quand je serai vieille je vais vivre en France
Sunny Clucker, she came, she saw, she moved on! Re: The Birds are back!Yes same here.
They haven't eaten a lot of the food I have put out. I thought because the trees are loaded with berries. But this past couple of days they are there. http://www.busheyk9.co.uk
If you can't be a good example........ you will just have to be a horrible warning Re: The Birds are back! What are you giving your to eat Wendy?
Re: The Birds are back!Been a busy day here for birds - we had field fares in the hawthorn this afternoon.

If you can't be a good example........ you will just have to be a horrible warning Re: The Birds are back!To be a geek, it's expected behaviour in severe winter conditions for birds to move into villages/towns. They know they can find food easier,in gardens, rather than fields, woods etc. It is warmer too in these places, than in the countryside.
They can also create multi species flocks when it stays severe for a prolonged period. Taxi..
Re: The Birds are back!
I didn't know this ... why? surely that would increase competition for the already limited resources? (off to look it up now) "Happiness is like a butterfly; the more you chase it, the more it will elude you, but if you turn your attention to other things, it will come and sit softly on your shoulder..." Thoreau.
Re: The Birds are back!Article on mixed-species flocks in case anyone else is interested.
