The Birds are back!

Post by Betty »

Because it has been so mild this winter the birds in our garden have shunned the feeders in favour of natural food, to the extent that I took most of the feeders down. Today however, they have decided that I am the better option. It has been lovely to see a huge variety of birds coming to feed - yes more feeders are out now. Has anyone else noticed this?
And also we have had loads of berries on our holly tree up until this week. Now most of them are gone. So that Old Wives' tale about berries after christmas meaning that there will be a cold snap coming is true! The birds obviously knew anyway :-D

Yes we have had a small flock of goldfinches down on the teasles by the pond today. Thay are so lovely. I always leave the teasles for them. I don't put out bird food since I got cats as it was just inviting trouble but in this weather the cats are inside all day anyway.
The robin gets away with pinching the girls feeder pellets.

Yes same here.
They haven't eaten a lot of the food I have put out. I thought because the trees are loaded with berries. But this past couple of days they are there.

To be a geek, it's expected behaviour in severe winter conditions for birds to move into villages/towns. They know they can find food easier,in gardens, rather than fields, woods etc. It is warmer too in these places, than in the countryside.

They can also create multi species flocks when it stays severe for a prolonged period.

I didn't know this ... why? surely that would increase competition for the already limited resources? (off to look it up now)

Article on mixed-species flocks in case anyone else is interested.
