Beating the butterflies

Post by Meanqueen »

My brassicas seem to be hanging on in there, I am eating the broccoli, and the sprouts and cabbages look healthy. I covered them with net curtains right from the start.....

And now they are four foot tall I have had to rebuild the frame to five foot, to extend the height as they were pushing the top up and bursting out of the sides......

There's a bonus to using pallets for raised beds, you can nail other bits of wood on to them. In the first picture the uprights were nailed inside the pallets, on the second I've fixed them to the outside. Around the top of the frame I have used canes, the joints are fastened together with some blue plastic tape. The market stall spring clips come in very handy and the side can be opened up when I pick my food. At last I think I might have beaten the butterfly.

Poor butterflies nothing! I have several stalks, totally devoid of leaf matter, in my garden that a few days ago were fine broccoli plants {cry}

Plant a Buddlea somewhere, they'll prefer that!

I've got several buddleas around the garden - maybe that's what attracted them in the first place! :shock:

I've painstakingly brushed of the whie fly and those nasty little yellow eggs. Just wish I'd spotted the flea beetle on my pak choi! {mr.angry}

I was in the garden yesterday and noticed there were 7 butterflys having a go at my cabbage and kale, to be honest, i cant remember seeing so many BFs in one year. My neighbours garden is in full flower but they ignored his patch and came into mine like guided missiles. I had mixed some washing up liquid and water to fight the greenfly and thought, what the hell and sprayed the veg, i could not believe the result. They came in and didnt even settle on the plants, they just hovered around for a few seconds and flew off to someone elses patch, i dont know how long this will last but its a start at least, cheers Dave

Same here Dave.
Our field has been allowed, this year, to grow like a meadow. The grass and wild flowers are absolutely gorgeous and a pleasure to walk around. The bonus, is dozens and dozens of beautiful butterflies.

Oh... how can you differentiate. All butterflies are beautiful :-D
There are quite a few of those. But we have a lot of brown butterflies, don't know their names. Also a few Red Admirals, are they called ? but some beautiful iridescent blue ones Just lovely.
Sorry guys we have gone a little )ot: as I am inclined to do.
