Potato fuit

Post by HedgeHugger »

I dug up some spuds for dinner, and found that there was a bunch of tomato looking fruit hanging from a branch of the plant.
I had a feeling they were poisonous so checked online. Yes they are, but I also found that was where you get potato seeds from :)

Has anyone grown spuds from the fruit?
Do I leave them there until they go dark?

Its alot of faffing about and takes 2 seasons to get potatoes to eat and no guarentees they will be ok or anything like the spuds they came from, much easier to buy seed potatoes of a variety you know. But if you like to experiment dry the seeds and store until the spring ,then sow and treat as you would tomatoes as the same family .When plants are big enough plant into garden to mature ,the small poatatoes that come from them are your seed for next year. )t'
A leek in the hand,is worth 2 in the roof.

That would be how you get new varieties of potatoes but I think most spuds come from saved tubers.
They are grown in Scotland because there are less diseases there (less aphids that carry disease???? or am I thinking of some other crop).
I think some farmers save their own seed for one year (or did in the past), but then brought in fresh seed to avoid build up of disease.

Yes they are poisonous, I think they are the same family as deadly nightshade as well as tomato. Aren't we lucky that someone tried a tomato and lived to tell us how good they are.
