Planting and weeding method.

Post by Orfy »

Does anyone have a "system" for sowing seeds.

I have wood borders around the beds. After hoeing I let the weeds come up then hoe again. I then lay sting guides and staple them to the borders. after putting in the drills, sowing and covering with soil I then cover with fleece to protect them from the elements and pests.

The best benefits are allowing me to hoe confidently between the rows to keep on top of the weeds.

I garden by a combination of chaos theory and survival of the fittest. Here's how:

1. Open seed pack
2. Sprinkle randomly over soil/compost
3. Cover with soil/compost
4. Water when necessary
5. Pull up any scrawny looking seedlings or dead/slug ravaged ones.
6. Remove any obvious weeds
7. Eat when big enough.

I was listening the Chris Beardshaw and he just throws seeds randomly and mixed in any bed.

He reckons it's the ultimate in companion planting and rotation.

Sounds tempting.

I have 2 methods:

1. Grow in pots

2. Dig over garden, try to get the stones out. Grow seedlings in potting compost in greenhouse then after a month or so, plant out. Water in well and weed regularly. Then accidentally let chickens out....

I sow everything in modues in seed trays or in loo rolls (especially parsnip & peas) and plant out when the beds on the allotment are ready, usually selecting out the best ones and giving the others away. The only seed I sow on site are carrots.

Sow seeds in plastic drinks cups, or any other small receptacle, place in plastic trays, free from the skip at the takeaway. Transplant into raised beds when big enough.

I also sow beetroot, carrots, and onions into plastic storage boxes.
