Don't think I'll be short of fruit next year.Don't think I'll be short of fruit next year.Take one old very large (12m x 4m) garden gazebo and a lot of netting and hey presto one fruit cage.

Baaaa Bok Bok Bok, Thank you for saying that
Mrs Al was at the allotment helping to put it together and on more than one occasion she accused me of being a lunatic I did tell her there was a very fine line between lunacy and genius I think the idea is great. I know this one is on a large scale but there must be loads of gazebo frames in garages and garden sheds up and down the country just waiting for a new lease of life as fruit cages Relax, I could have been a twin.
Ilona,
As yet, I havn't got enough to fill it either Hence the comment about next year It may well be a fruit, bean and pea cage this year

Re: Don't think I'll be short of fruit next year.I got all my current bushes for £2 at Wilk in sun. i have brought a few a year so that I always have 3 that are fruiting at their prime.
I have been really pleased with them ... obviously you will have to wait for them to grow! but LOADS of fruit at a real BARGAIN! x 2 children, half a springer Spaniel, a Hamster, 2 Goldfish and an allotment. And a very excited, now mummy of some chickens again, Daisey, Dotty and Master Yoda!
A chicken crossing the road is poultry in motion!
Re: Don't think I'll be short of fruit next year.Great idea but one burning question....How will the buzzy bees get in to pollinate the trees?
3 kids, one rescue cat, 3 rescue hens and one fantastic husband
Re: Don't think I'll be short of fruit next year.I suppose the netting doesn't need to be put over the frame until the fruits are set - or use a netting which has wide enough gaps to let the bees through but not the birds (which is the general idea of a fruit cage)
Re: Don't think I'll be short of fruit next year.
The white pannels at the back unzip and the netting at one end can be folded back Relax, I could have been a twin.
Re: Don't think I'll be short of fruit next year. That is indeed a brilliant bit of recycling, well done. Unfortunatly I threw away my old frame last year which would have been a perfect size for all my friut trees and plants and would have kept the chooks out too. It's worth looking out for an old gazebo on ebay or car boot sale. Good luck with filling your massive cage, perhaps this year you could rent out some space to other gardeners at your allotment.

The trouble with having a really good sleep is, you're not awake to enjoy it! Re: Don't think I'll be short of fruit next year.Renting out space is a good idea but I doubt I would have many takers
Although I have decided my beans and peas are going in there this year, as well as ten raspberry canes, three gooseberry bushes, twe black current bushes, loads of strawberries and maybe some outside tomatoes and cucumbers. I have been slogging on digging and weeding it and have managed about a quater of it Now I have diggers back, shoulder, elbow, wrist and leg, Relax, I could have been a twin.
