can i plant onions in pots?

Post by hattiesmummy »

Thats my question for the day!!

I have tried really hard to get the whole veg patch ready this year and am still only half way there

So i have lots of seeds which i have stored and am hoping to plant next year, and some tomato plants which i am going to plant in hanging baskets )c( .

But, I have onion sets which wont keep and i would hate to see them go to waste so can i plant them in pots? if so how deep do they need to be? )hlp>

Thanks :-D

Yes you can.

Do you mean how deep do the pots have to be or how deep do the sts need to be.

The pots can be minimal, maybe 8" as for depth of the set you plant them so the tips are at the surface.

I hope it's ok to grow onions in pots because mine have been in a large pot for a few weeks now!!

Onions will be fine in pots - just make sure it is well drained (you don't want them sitting in damp conditions) The only problem will be the size - they are not likely to reach maximum size planting at this late stage but will still be a useful crop )t'

i am going to try them in pubs this year, as the ones in the garden are looking decidedly iffy, so i have nothing to loose really as i already have the sets. May as well loose them in tubs and plant something that i know will grow in the garden.
