First attempt at yogurt cheese today
First attempt at yogurt cheese todayI made yogurt cheese for the first time today. I started out making yogurt but decided to go one step further and see how it turned out. It was a success and I have ended up with a mild cream cheese which tastes rather good.
I have no special cheese making equipment apart from my easyo yogurt maker, so it's turned out to be quite cheap to make also. Has anyone else tried to make yogurt cheese? And what were the results? Re: First attempt at yogurt cheese todayI havn't made it but it sounds delicious

Re: First attempt at yogurt cheese todayAny suitable fresh herbs can be added. Chives, tarragon, mint or how about borage or salad burnet.
Fresh ground black pepper would be nice also. I'm going to have fun experimenting now I know my method works.

Re: First attempt at yogurt cheese todayFor god's sake don't try this in case it kills you, but I used to have a friend years ago, who just used to let her milk go off then strain it and add salt/pepper. It was very nice.

Re: First attempt at yogurt cheese todayHow is it likely to kill anyone? I'd would think your friends attempts would be more likely to end in illness.
The method has been used by many people on the internet and in recipe books I've read. As far as I know they are all still alive.
Re: First attempt at yogurt cheese todaySorry Helen, just realised I may have misread your post.

Re: First attempt at yogurt cheese todayFor those of you who wish to know how the yogurt cheese is made here goes.
Firstly I am assuming that you already know how to make yogurt and have the equipment or your own method of making it. I use the large Easiyo yogurt maker but use milk instead of the flavoured milk powders from the maker. Put the milk in a saucepan and bring up to nearly boiling point. Take off the heat and leave to cool until it drops to blood heat (37.0C 98.6F). Put in to your chosen yogurt maker after adding 2tbs of live commercial yogurt. I use Total Greek Yogurt. Leave until yogurt is ready, a good 6-8 hours. Line a sieve with several layers of kitchen paper or clean muslin and place over a bowl. Put in the yogurt and allow to drain until firm and the texture of mozzarella. I have added a little salt and fresh chives but any fresh herbs will do. Garlic would also be good along with the herbs

Re: First attempt at yogurt cheese todayProbably the easiest and cheapest way to make yogurt is using the thermos flask method as described at this web sitehttp://www.greenfootsteps.com/how-to-make-yogurt.html
