Any healthy stodgy food tips?

Post by Richard »

Because of my recent mouth adventures and not getting fully back into my stride, I've lost weight.

Being a skinny git, normally about 10st4lbs summer and maybe 4 - 5lbs heavier in winter (I'm exactly 6'0"), if I lose weight, I look ill !!

I eat for England, always have and am the same weight I was at 18 years old.

However, I've lost about 4/6lbs and need to put it on.

Against the usual losing weight situation threads - any good tips. I can only take so much of Steamed Puddings and Shepherds Pies !!

Thanks, Richard

PS - My thyroid is OK !

See.... you are still at it. LOL
My diet starts tomorrow.
We are off for an Indian meal tonight. That will stick a good 2 lb on me tomorrow guaranteed. Tandoori Trout to start and a Vegetable Dansak and I am away. Do you like Indian food?
Wendy
PS Spencer says walking in the door puts 4 lb on him, is that any help ?

Richard

Do you sit down and eat? chewing 20 times at least every mouthful.

Thickened soups will help both the gum problems and the weight.

Porridge with plenty of jam, honey and whatever sweet stuff you like, NOT all at once......

You said you have been rushing here, there and everywhere - SIT.

I'll come up with more later.....

Some say it's like shovelling coal into the Rayburn when I eat!

I do rush round, can't walk slow etc. Can't sit in a sofa for more than half an hour (unless I've dozed off).

The Porridge sounds good. I have that in the summer with the Cricketers and gulp gallons of it.
I am known to be the Cricket Team's biggest overhead !

The gums are almost OK, just a couple of ulcers to my name now.
What I'm not doing is 'snacking' , but that's not good for you anyway.

Think it's self discipline isn't it.

Wendy, have your Indian Meal in India, nice and hot there, just the job!

Nearly as good, most of our's are cooked by our Sikh friends LOL

To be honest it is your metabolism. Neither Spencer nor I warm a chair usually. We are out every evening except Sundays and Wednesday, dance ourselves silly at least once a week.
You are just a lucky one, beleive it or not. They say those who are underweight will live longer than the others.
What is your Mum like, is she slight also? as she is a good age isn't she ?

Hello Richard

Id suggest plenty of whole grains, complex carbohydrates and lean proteins. Go easy on the refined sugar - you may well want to put on weight, but you dont want to effect your health in other ways, ie diabetes.
If you eat small, healthy amounts, and often instead of 3 meals a day, you'll be 're-stoking' your burner BEFORE the fuel goes, if you understand my meaning, thus, weight gain.
Oat bars are ideal.

(Ex-powerlifter, so I know what Im talking about - kinda!!)

Good luck!

I used to be a weight training instructor and to help guys build weight I used to make the following, don't be put off by the eggs, sounds gross but tastes delicious!

1/2 pint fruit juice
1/2 pint milk/ greek yoghurt
A banana
any other fruit
3 eggs
whizz or blend for a few seconds

This doesn't contain high fat or sugar so calories are high but good: Drink this every day in addition to normal food. It is very healthy and I did it myself when I had problems keeping weight on. I had a borderline overactive thyroid for years. (all the women that hated me for years need not now, it has slowed down finally and I now have squidgy bits the same as normal people!)
Everything comes to those who wait...

I can sympathise Richard, having the same problem myself!

Unfortunately I dont have anything that I can vouch for as being great for putting on weight , but Geddauk makes some great points. The main problem I have is trying to maintain weight while still eating healthily. Not a good idea to just eat heaps of sugar and fat.....

I think porridge is a good idea, but I like to have dried fruit in it. I know that IS high in sugar, but at least you get a bit more fibre and minerals etc than just putting sugar on it. I have lots of soy milk on it too. (not low fat!)

Nuts and seeds like sunflower seeds are fairly high in calories I think and have good nutrition too.

I hate to admit it being a coffee lover, but I think drinking too much coffee is a no-no as caffeine is an appetite suppressent and coffee tends to rev up your metabolism...... also it can apparently block the absorption of certain things like iron, calcium? (especially if you drink it close to a meal) have to check that.

I know, I have installed some coding which detects porkies on weight threads.
When someone fibs, I get a flashing window saying "and I was the first person to stand on the moon".
Your reply actually overheated my hard drive.

Richard

Thanks for all the advice everyone.

hey i just happened across this on the web when looking at something completely unrelated and thought of your post.

"Tips for putting on weight:

· Don't skip meals
· If you find it difficult to eat larger portions of food at meal times, eat small and often
· It often helps to nibble nuts between meals
· Eat more healthy fats such as nuts (any kind), avocado and olive oil
· Include a smoothie each day (make it with milk plus extra skimmed and malted milk powders, yoghurt, banana and honey)
Exercise can also help to build muscle and your local gym may be able to help. Swimming is also good for overall muscle development and often increases the appetite."

I think people have probably suggested most of those already!!!
