Interesting to hear "stovies" mentioned.
I am at Uni in Aberdeen (from Plymouth originally)
My mates were talking about a friend's wedding, saying that after everyone had had a drink at the reception...then they bought the stovies out. I had to ask what it was. I had never heard of it before. It's like a wedding tradition up here apparently.

Just coincidence that it should come up now.

I love this thread, great lovely cheap food.
I will be trying that macoroni dish, and stovies............now I have a reciepe!

I have a book by Margaritte Patten called 'We'll Eat Again' it is stuffed full of wartime recipes quite a few of which I have tried. They certainly seem healthy compared to all the butter, oil and sugar and meat that we use today.
