Blepharitis - eye condition

Post by Benny&Co »

Have any of you any experience of it?

After weeks/months of waking up with the sockets/lids of my eyes all swollen (so much so, the top socket of my eye would overlap my top eyelid {cry} ) I eventually went to see my GP two weeks ago.

I'd tried ruling out all kinds of things from not wearing contact lenses/make up/perfume/etc etc and nothing seemed to make any difference. Even on holiday it happened, so I guess it's nothing to do with our animals either!

My GP seems to think I've got Blepharitis and he prescribed Maxitrol eye cream containing sterioid and two types of anti-biotic.

So I've been using it twice a day for the last two weeks and I think it has helped, but the swelling hasn't completely gone away, especially of a morning.

I've very tentatively started putting my contact lenses in, because I hate wearing my glasses, the vision just doesn't seem as good for me. Haven't noticed any change better or worse for this.

I went back to GP this morning, because coming to the end of my cream and wanted to know what next. He's referring me to a specialist opthalmologist and as we've got healthcare through hubbly's work I can go private. Now I know that private is no better than NHS (have seen through work) but at least I can get in quicker I guess.

As you can't really use steroids long term, I've to reduce the cream to two applications a week until I see this opthalmology guy.

Feeling a bit down in the dumps with it all really {cry}

I have suffered with it for a couple of years now - it's a bloody nuisance. )ang

You were lucky as when I went to my gp he just said oh, yes it's a chronic condition and just keep bathing your eyes in warm water several times a day. So I have been. It flares up from time to time and really I never feel it has gone away and now I have a sty which I can't get rid of and it's really making me very upset.

In desperation went to see a pharmacist at the chemist a couple of weeks ago and had the most bizzare conversation with him:

Can you give me anything for my eye?

What's the matter with it?

I have blepharitus and a sty and it won't go away

In what way is it causing you problems?

Well it's making me feel really low

I can't even see it.

Really?

Really.

Well, I can't wear make up and on occasions would like to.

You don't need make up you look great as you are.

At this point I gave up and said to him, so what you are saying is that you don't have a magic potion you can give me.

Yes.

So will it be in by tuesday.......?

Ha ha ha - honestly. I was smiling but bemused when I left the shop!

I do know how you feel though as it does upset me.

Thanks Helen that made me smile {hug&kiss}

It's horrible isn't it - and I know there's loads more worse things in the world - but waking up and feeling like a monster isn't great hey +pinn+ {cry}

I've been doing hot compresses twice a day, just two cotton wool pads soaked with hot water, bathing each eye prior to putting in the Maxitrol.

I'm surprised your GP didn't prescribe you anything :? Maybe you should go back and say you're still not right - especially as it's affecting your vision too.

I'm uptodate with my eye tests and have annual contact lense checks too. My last one was January and I mentioned about getting dry eyes at the end of a long day at work, so I've started using premium lenses (at the same price )t' ) but that hasn't affected the morning swelling upness!

My GP explained to me initially that it's a chronic/long term condition that will flare up from time to time.

In fact, come to think of it, this has happened on previous occasions - just put it down to being 'something and nothing' as you do.

Yes I've seen that Wendy, thanks. Think I'll just stick with the hot compresses for now because I don't have the sticky/crusty skin around my eyelids.

That sounds really painful {hug} {hug}
I seem to suffer with sty's quite frequently and find Brolene eye drops clear them up quickly (the ointment works better but I can't bear that blurry sticky feeling it gives me).

Hope it gets better soon >fi<

and Helen... go back to the docs and get some jollop for it )t'

Thanks Lucy - going by what my GP said, it's a long term thing that can just have flare ups, so no cure as such, you can only treat the symptoms.

If you're getting regular stye's, do you think it'd be worth getting checked out too? Now they are painful, I remember getting them as a child.

I know what you mean about the ointment - I'd get up early and put it in so it had chance to work with eyes closed, before getting up properly. Then I'd put the second dose in just before bed so it wouldn't matter if it mucked up my vision!

Do they know what causes it. I hope it isn't hereditary.

I believe it is where the oil gland gets blocked, hence the warm water to try to open it up.

Well, as far as I can see Wendy it's either an allergic reaction or it can be from a staphylococcal bacterial infection +confused+ I think they'd need to do a swab to test for that though to make sure.

Here's a link to the NHS website which gives more information about it:
