Lavender is one of the most gentle oils - you can even use it on burns, so it's a bit unusual for you to be allergic to it. Go carefully with the bergamot - it is known to be irritant on sensitive skin so inhale by all means, but I suggest don't use it in the bath. Basil oil is very energising too. Baldwins is a good internet company for buying the more unusual oils.
I've read that mint/menthol is stimulating to the brain, so how about some minty chewing gum? People apparently do better in exams with it!
I've used lavender shampoo and things and it makes me come out in pretty bad rashes we had to take our lavender out the garden too as it would irritate me so much. I looked for bergamot in local stores but no luck! Eeeeek I'm so so fussy but I hate the taste of mint when I brush my teeth I have to get rid of the taste asap, so I'm afraid I can't have minty chewing gum or anything like that
Hey Lisa, you should be able to get bergamot in places like the body shop. I put a few drops in a bowl of hot water and inhale it or just have it sitting in my room. I'm not sure what pain medication you're on but some of the opioid ones can cause vivid dreams so they may be a factor in your sleepless nights. Hope it settles down for you soon, this cold weather must be really bad too

I'm afraid I don't use Body Shop or any products tested on animals/owned by companies who test on animals I'm currently on Salfasalazine, Naproxen, Diclofenac and some allergy tablet. I've always been a dreamer, used to get them all the time when I was little (and was on no medication), but then grew out of it, but it's slowly come back. But, my tablets are giving me really terrible heart burn so I'm not really taking them at the moment, as the heart burn is so bad it's 6 and 2 3's, so I really don't know
Hi Lisa, the naproxen and diclofenac will probably be causing your heartburn so it may be worth asking your doctor to prescribe something to protect your stomach. They are both from the same family of meds so you should really only be taking one or the other. ( sorry I know I sound like a total nag!) Hope you're able to get some help from a sleep specialist soon, going without sleep is really awful

Ayeee, I know, I've been to hospital about it and she's meant to be contacting my GP about prescribing me a stomach barrier, but it's been 4 weeks and I've heard nothing, maybe I should ring up I was given the naproxen a few months ago, she didn't tell me to stop taking the diclofenac though But I only take the diclofenac when the naproxen and salfasalazine isn't taking the edge off the pain. Thank you, Ellie
Lisa - have you ever tried keeping a dream diary? I'm a believer in the idea that dreams are part of the way our brains work - sifting through 'stuff' from our waking hours and processing it all, kind of tidying up and filing things away. Sometimes keeping a dream diary can help your brain to 'unstick' itself, because you're taking the information that has come through in your dreams, translating it into writing (or drawing or whatever), and that helps you to move on. Not sure if any of that makes any sense I think I posted here about my weird recurring dreams a little while back? I've always had spells like this, same dream over and over, or strings of really weird, bizarre dreams. I don;'t keep a dream diary all the time, just intermittently, but it does seem to help improve the quality of sleep.

Oooo I never thought of that, I think I'll try it! But some of them 2 minutes after i wake up i forget, like i remember the odd bits but can't put it together at all. When I was really young (about 4 til about 7) had two re-occurring dreams (well, one was a nightmare), which I remember in great detail, but I've not had a re-occurring since. All this dream stuff is really bizarre!
It takes a bit of practice - once you've done it for a week or so, you'll probably start to remember them better because you're expecting to have to remember them iyswim.

I think I can relate to the belief that dreams are a way of our brain sorting stuff out, and I think I too might try a dream diary as I have the oddest dreams, they all seem to relate in one way or other to situations at present, old career and family. Its frustrating when you can only remember odd bits and pieces of them Lisa, but try Little brown rfrogs suggestion of a diary I am going to have a go, it might bring a bit of calm to my night.
