Card making and paper craft?

Post by Shlugh »

Hi all!

Me and my 4 year old daughter love card making and I was wondering who else here does it or scrapbooks?

We were at the big craft fair at the SECC today (got our entry free with my Tesco points) and have come back with lots of stuff for not a lot of money. There was a stall with everything £1 and if you bought 12 items it was £10

We got Laura Ashley and Lawrence Llewelyn Bowen paper, brads, glue, sticky gems, a new craft knife and more for our £10.

I can feel a big make and do coming on now, my fingers are itching.

What card and paper craft do other members do? Does anyone want to share pictures? I will try upload some of our work to share tomorrow.

I make cards - some with photos - others with collage. Mind you, I will not do Xmas cards again after a couple of years ago - they all arrived in pieces apparantly! }hairout{ It took me hours and hours to make them too. {cry}

I have some great stamps for the inside with 'happy birthday' etc and a 'hand made by' one as well, although generally I don't get stamping right so I avoid it!

I always put a paper liner inside mine and recently tried some of those peel off thingys - they were much better than I thought they would be.

I love to make cards, when I get the time! We have a very good card stall on our local market and through the winter various courses are run, which give you the opportunity to learn/try out new card making skills. I like to stamp and emboss cards. Would love to do a scrap book but never seem to get around to it. Maybe a project for when I give up work?

Morning!

I like the rubber stamps with messages too, I was lucky enough to be given a huge box of stamps from a friend that was giving up and I'd like to try embossing. I have the ink pads and glitters, but need to get a heat gun.

My little girl loves the peel offs. We got some pretty ones of dragonflys, and she stuck them on plain white card, then coloured in all the gaps with her pencils. They were lovely.

Do you make your liners yourself Helen? I bought some at one point, but they were very expensive. I've since got a guillotene, and was going to try cut my own.

I was given a present of a scrapbook last birthday (nearly a year ago!) and haven't been brave enough to try it yet, I'm scared to waste it. A friend has told me there is a papercraft group that meets near here, so I may look into that.

Somebody recently showed me a way of using fabric on cards that I'm keen to try. She uses squares of stiff cardboard, and wraps the fabric round them, sticking them on the cards for a 3-d effect.

I know what you mean Helen about some of them not making it through the post in one piece.. }hairout{ ...every year I get a hand made christmas card from my friend Sue, but she embroiders simple designs on them like a tree or a robin..I appreciate them so much that I won't throw them out, so I have quite a collection in my xmas dec box. ...when I get the decs out I'll try and photograph a few to show you..they are beautiful.. :-D

I don't do much in the way of paper craft, have always been more of a 3d person, eg I like modeling marzipan animals to decorate cakes, but I rather fancy having a go at those layered decoupage cards - you know the sort, where you have several layers of the same picture separated by sticky fixers, each layer cut away a bit more to give a 3d effect. Anyone tried these?

I make cards. I buy the coloured card, £4 for 50, then find bits and bobs to put on it. I cut up old cards, save shiny bits of paper, ribbons, coloured card from brochures, pictures from magazines, anything. Then I sew it all on with very neat stitches using embroidery thread. I put an insert in the middle, also sewn in.

I wish I could show you the card I made my hub for our anniversary, as I was really proud of it, but he has it. I would have liked to have edged the pic in gold pen though. Silver and gold pens are a must!

For the liners I buy sheets of card sized paper (generally in cream or white) and I trim them to a little smaller than the card itself.

I also really like those little metal things you push through and then squash the flaps. Can't remember what they are called! }hairout{

I have a big box of 'bits', but I fight with the kids to keep the best bits!

I shall be totally bah humbug here - can't stand the sending Christmas Cards thing. You know the person sending has a list, written a few words in haste and posted it - made even worse now by putting PC Address stickers on the envelopes.

As for fancy ones, they go on the Mantelpiece and first week in January go in the bin, get made into present gift tags for next year or Compost Heap (best frugal use).
Then there's the extra hoovering because all the glitter has come off on the carpet. I used to make them at School - I enjoyed it then, now I feel sorry for the people I sent them to!!!

I have to admit I do have a store of all the cards my kids and grandkids have ever made for me.

I send about six a year. On Christmas Day I ring a few people who aren't expecting a call and wish them a good day that way.

Don't get me wrong, I like the family festivities of Christmas, but the day after Boxing Day it's let's get down the Sales and 364 days of normality with other people

The whole thing is complete commercialised marketing waste, but guess it keeps the Post Office going!

'Blimey, I am a miserable old git!' Sounds about right )grin2(

I also have all the cards and presents my children made for me over the years.
When we sorted my mothers stuff out after she died, there were all the things we had made as children as well. Very touching we thought.

As you know Wendy, I wrap my Presents up in Newspaper (The Times, so quite tasteful and up market).

I don't mind Cards and presents, I just like cards to be personal and not out of a box ie 'That's a nice card for Grandma' (usually that one has money on it {warn} ).
Equally that makes them expensive - I do make some occasionally on the PC and of a subject relating to that person.

I think I shall just say - I go along with it !!

Richard

PS. Now when's the Christmas Party ? )de:
