Eco - but possible not frugal

Post by vyxxn »

We've been getting our milk delivered to the door - in good old fashioned milk bottles, the same size and shape they were 30 odd years ago. It costs a bit more than those big 2 litre plastic things but theres no rubbish except the little tinfoil cap and its nice having milk bottles on the step again :-D

Agree with you vyxxn, but we had a problem getting milk delivered. Milkman wasn't delivering till about 10 a.m and then by the time I was getting home (on days when we did have a summer) milk was off.

Plus you feel good about keeping someone in a job )t'

My children were talking about this thing called 'the milkman' yesterday. Whilst I was explaining what that 'rare creature' was I also mentioned that this 'new' idea of recycling is not so new. It was a natural way of life 30 years ago with for instance the returning of pop bottles and leaving the empty milk bottles out for collection and the Rag Bone man who would collect most things from you every week, and sometimes pay you for the goods. they were amazed and came up with the best line ever.

"so every one used to recycle but have forgotten how to do so"

I had to agree with that one!

Ah, days of future passed !

We have a Milkman come down the lane to the end house - at 3am ! We also have the occasional visit from the 'modern Rag and Bone Man' (basically 'Wanderers'), but they're OK and I usually find them a few bits of rubbish.

Oh for the days of "Milko", the chat on the doorstep and Gold Topped Milk spoilt only by the birds pecking it if you weren't quick enough bringing it in.

I think its about 55p a pint, I cannot remember as I get a bill every 4 or 5 weeks. This works out at £1.10 for 2 pints and I think its about 90p a litre in the shops, not a lot to pay for the convenience and not having all that plastic to get rid of.

Its 57p a pint (inc delivery), just checked. So 6 pints would be £3.42 so over a pound more than from Mr Morris, but it means we don't run out and the lucky chap still has a job!

I would love a Milkman Kate!

Not seen one around this area in years!

When i first moved here in 1982 we had one, but they then got rid of alot of the rounds and eventually they didnt bother!
