Battery girls

Post by melons »

I've got some battery girls coming this sunday from the battery hen welfare trust, I can't wait & i'm very excited, it's been a few years since I've re-homed & watched battery girls find the real world of outside, I'm going to become a total chicken bore, so this is my first of many posts if all goes well.
Best pennies I'll be spening this year :-)

Cheers
Mel

p.s & no I don't eat meat, or eggs for that matter.
Cheers

Hi Mel,
Join the ranks of the chicken bores :)
They are worth every wasted hour you spend with them. Good for you rescueing these little brown hens.

I look an expectant mother, I've got all the goodies & everything is ready, but not the girls yet.
So my boss has donated me the monday off, as I'll be no use here :-) & I want to escort them on there first excursion, if they're up to it, they are meant to be a tad bald & scrawny, bless.

I think I need to start a 'Broody Parents' category in the Forum (for the humans) :-D

Melon's, it's great to have you here. You can bore us as much as you like, we won't mind!

Which Branch are you getting them from and how long have you had to wait?

They do a grand job don't they.

Good luck!!

The battery welfare trust have been absolutely fantastic, I am in the middle of the Lincoln, Comer & the Essex branches, I wanted real rotters to re-home, I don't really eat eggs, so that wasn't the driving force behind my quest, I just want to save some & watch them blossom. I contacted Lincoln first & he was lovely, saying that his were usually in quite good condition, & had recently had really good news coverage in the local press, so lots of new potential parents. I then contacted Jean in essex & she was due some really bald scrawny ones, who were due in this weekend, so I've reserved 5. I only had to wait 2 weeks, so I've spent that time getting their "bottom draw" ready. I also sponsored a hen called Lady for my other 1/2 whose birthday's tomorrow, & the envelope arrived today, perfect timing I say. I usually sponsor Kiruba the Elephant from WWF for him but thought I'd spend the birthday pennies closer to home.
Maybe this is what becomes of not wanting children, we don't like kids :-)

Cheers.

Hello Mel, I'll be looking forward to reading your posts-I'm delighted you're getting ex-battery hens, its a terrible way to keep animals for mass egg production. I have very sadly rehomed my three girls-it just didn't work out for all sorts of reasons, and I'm heartbroken, the garden is so empty without them. I have just sent Richard a few pics for the members photo page so hopefully you will soon be able to see a good example of how quickly a poor creature can turn into a beautiful chicken. I'm going to need my "chicken fix" so will stay a member on this forum. When we move I'll re-home some ex-battery hens again-but thats a year or two away. I dont eat many eggs and didn't get them for that reason-so I gave most of the eggs away. I found my friends, neighbours and work mates were very supportive and donated money for the eggs they had. In a very short space of time I had collected over £14.00 for the BHWT.
When is a chicken not a chicken?....when its a battery hen!

Oh my sexy girls are just fab :-D , they are in reasonable condition, a couple a quite bald, but all have got on with finding their way round, they are quite forward going, they've had their massive punch up already, within about an hour of their arrival, so hopefully all should soon settle down, I hate it :(
One seems to be getting it more than the others, no blood spilt, just rough & tumbles, I do hope they leave her alone in time.
If i can work out how to post pic's, I've got some quite amusing ones of their first out of the cage experience. Apart from that, I'll keep them in for the week, then let them run round the garden this weekend coming, that should be fun, our cat thinks they're fab, she is the only cat on this planet who gets picked on by the birds in the garden, so they are perfectly safe with her.
Oh I nearly forgot, I got 4 eggs this morning too, I didn't expect that :) they must have been well clenched to make it all the way from Devon, without dropping those on route

Fantastic news :-D :-D

The squabbling will soon ease as they sort out the pecking order.

You can load a picture on here if you have a Photobucket account or access to something similar to link to.
You'd need to reduce it to about 400 pixels wide, or it'll make the browser go very wide.

Alternatively, send to me attached to an email, but I wouldn't be able to load them until Sunday or Monday after my return.

Bet you're so chuffed and tickled pink !!

Just had a look at the photos of your chicks!!!

Bless them, they look great - makes me go all warm inside when people resuce ex-batts.

I got 4 from BHWT also, and have had them for the past 1.5 years - they're fine although 2 are a bit poorly at the mo.

Enjoy them, and I bet they love you for giving them their freedon

Do you know what...I love em, they already have very strong personalities, Betty & Mrs Miggins are my fav's, can't help it, they are so totally sweet & very good friends together, they are the darkest two, Mrs miggins is "enormous"
They are dropping bombs like no-bodies business, we ate the first 2, but don't really like eggs, so the rest are going to our cat sitting neighbours, who are now also broody for some girls, but they rent so maybe it wont be possible :?
I brought meal worms today, good god world war 3 broke out, I can't touch them  so I fed them with a set of huge plastic tweezers I used to use when we hand reared a baby black bird, they were jumping in the air to grab them first, even Mrs Miggins ate a some, she's a bit slow on the up take of everything, but is a bit perkier today, I think she's maybe a bit dim, I love dim animals & we seem to specialise in them here :-D
So my babies are feeling tip top today. 2 days to go, then out they come into the garden, more camera action I hope.
Cheers
