Toilet PaperOver the last few frugal years I've been delighted to receive and use some useful freebies. Railway sleepers, timber rafters, three rolls of shed roofing, etc.
One such freebie was a stack of loo rolls which had the 'wrong' label on them. Therefore, they couldn't be sold, and it would not have been financially viable to send them back for repacking, so with the supplier's blessing they were 'wasted'. In fact they were made available to anyone who wanted them. Most were too 'refined' to 'sink' to the lows of taking free cheapie loo rolls - but not me! I gratefully accepted the opportunity of helping them out with their disposal of said pallet of loo rolls. I took home a car full. Four years and one month later ... and we're on the last pack! My posterior had been used to the ones made by labrador puppies, but it got used to the more scratchy, narrower rolls quite quickly. I've just been to Sayn's Berries and am most delighted to report that their Basics range of loo paper is of higher quality than my posterior has had to put up with for four years ... so I invested in 8 packs at £1.13 per pack of 12 rolls. Well that sounds like a bargain although not as good as the one you got 4 years ago! I find my cupboards are now full of goods with yellow packaging with green writing from the son of Morris - mostly you cannot tell the difference (not allowed to buy the baked beans though', the boys are too fussy for that).
I thought I read somewhere that the more expensive, quilted ones take longer to break down and that we should all use the cheapy ones.
On a different site dedicated to self-sufficiency, there is a whole forum dedicated to the topic of not using loo roll at all, but instead pieces of cut up towel, which you then put in the washing basket and wash with your usual daily/weekly load of washing. For number twos, apparently you use a squirty bottle on yr bum first!! It's better to be looked over, than overlooked!
Toilet paper...In the 'good 'old days' of growing up in the 50's we had an outside loo and squares of newspaper on a knotted string(early example of recycling perhaps?)Whilst using the 'loo' and being an inquisitive child,I used to read the articles on the newspaper,IT USED TO ANNOY me when the rest of the article was missing(some newspaper was used in firelighting!) These days I just use my trips to the loo to have a think! On a personal note,I use moist medicted roll,a tad dear, but oh the feeling of being 'clean'That is all I have to say on this matter, like everything else,it all ends up flushed down the pan! atb ged 'Ask not what can your Country do for you, rather,What can you do for your Country'
John F Kennedy Service before self, Strength and honour. Toilet rools!!Hi Richard, Like S-S,we had MOD approved 'islay' type squares. They were I recall no larger than those still in existence today!Often 'in the field' for long periods of 'soldiering' every good intention started off well, but in most cases, reality was the order of the day and anything that could be used was 'employed for purpose' so to speak! My coldest experiences were in the 'Artic Circle',you got the 'job' over with pretty sharpish! atb ged 'Ask not what can your Country do for you, rather,What can you do for your Country'
John F Kennedy Service before self, Strength and honour. Back in the 60s, before the days of unit pricing loo roll was divided into sensible size sheets, one was enough. Now that they have to say how many "shts per penny" (as Sburys called it - they soon amended that to sheets), they are about a third smaller , so you use more paper.
It seems to be harder to find unbleached, recycled now. When buying loo paper I noticed it is cheaper to buy the four packs if they have 2 rolls free that the 9 packs with 3 free!!!

3 children, 3 grandchildren, 3 chooks, 3 fish, a shrimp that thinks its a prawn and a dappy dog. http://www.acountrygrandma.blogspot.com Interesting post , i buy usually a name if its on offer, but like the new lab puppy, fat rolls they last a long time, ages in fact you only get 3 rolls in a pack, they were on offer for ages as a new product. And i am afraid to say i use bou*y kitchen roll which i love its brilliant for cleaning, but do get cheaper stuff for the kids to wipe up there spills which am afraid to say a daily. Plus i am obsessed with dish cloth and any other cloth being full of germs with kitchen roll you just dispose off.
Mellonia money talks but all mine ever says is goodbye
like others on here i tend to buy in bulk at discount.
But do keep my eyes open and work out the special offers to see which is the best deal. Unsure how many rolls we use as we have more than 1 toilet. Will prob' monitor now! LOL My kids are trained to take a cloth out to clean up spills. I have some nice clothes (with pretty flowers or strips) which i change every day and wash at 60 c along with tea towels. But i also have some recylced clothes that the kids use to mop up spills that are made from old clothes, and kept in an old 4pt milk bottle with top cut off ( Thank Anthea Turner!) I have chickens Blaze, Star and Comet, who have met Sunny Clucker in Cheshire :-)
