If the original pendant is going back up but just sat inside a chandelier type thingy then nothing electrical has changed really, the only difference is that you no longer have a ceiling rose, removal of these is common.

I would be concerned if you were putting a metal fitting up with no earth.

The metal chains will be in contact with the brass hook/ceiling rose and the plastic wiring connector will be hidden under it. Still OK?

Thanks by the way!

As long as no bare wires are touching the metal hook or parts of the chandelier then it would be fine )t'

As long as you are using the same pendant or one similar then no probs. The cable that is running through the hook and chandelier will not be affected so the bulb is in essence back in its original position. Just make sure that when the lamp is on there is no heat stress on anything from the bulb, unlikely looking at it.

A lot of lighting circuits in older houses did not have an earth. It's frequently a problem as most replacement lights say that they must be earthed. There's no easy solution if you are going by the book, could be a major re-wiring job. :(

Agreed, i would not recommend a metal fitting without an earth being available.

You can purchase light fittings that do not require an earth (in fact instructions say specifically not to use one) from major stores. Wickes I know keep some.

There is no light fittind. Just a see through plastic connector block so I can connect the down cable

Surely you disconnected at the mains (and warned everyone else in the house not to switch it back on) before you started anything like that? yike*

OH says our 'old fashioned "oh, we can't touch that it's not up to modern standards" fuse box' is better than the new consumer units. If he is working on anything he removes the fuse from that circuit, a friend of his had a new Consumer Unit, so he switched off before going into the loft but his wife thought it had 'tripped' as it often did, so switched it on again. He survived but it was a shocking experience.

When the room was decorated a couple of years ago, the rose was unscrewed and wires looked at, and yes, the mains was off. As we didn't know what was what, it was just left like that so the wires are still visible (up to a point).

Am I reading that right???
Are they bare wires or is there a light bulb? I don't like the idea of live wires dangling from the ceiling. Yes, I know you're not tall enough to touch them, but even so...

No Mo they are not bare - but thank you for checking - you never know, do you? :-D

The rose was unscrewed from the ceiling with the pendant hanging from it and pulled out slightly to begin work, but as he had no idea which colour was which, it was left.
