solar oven

Post by p.penn »

Had a bloke in at work today who wanted old cardboard boxes as he wanted to make a solar oven. Apparantly it's a square of foil, cardboard and scrunched up newspaper insulation. Not heard of this before.

He also told me about a place in Wales that does eco tech stuff - I will see if I can find it online when I have more time.

Was it the Centre for Alternative Technology Helen?
We make a haybox oven sometimes when we're camping - really good for coming back to camp on a miserable rainy day (not that it rains in Cornwall in August +pinn+ ) - just a matter of bringing everything up to boil in the morning, packing it all away into the oven & coming back to a fabulous stew :)

I'm not sure if this is the same as your solar oven, Helen, but it sounds similar. Blogger Billie Jane has made something called a Hay Box Cooker, she has just tested it with porridge, the results are interesting. She is going to experiment with different foods. You heat the food, cook it for a minute, then put it in an insulated box to continue cooking. Suppose to reduce the amount of gas/electricity you use. Todays post tells what heppened, and yesterdays post is how she made the box.

I would guess that you have to be a bit careful with meat, if it drops below a certain temperature the low heat will encourage germs to multiply.

It rained all the time when I was in Cornwall, last year. {cry}

Jane has made veg soup in her Hay Box Cooker, it was a success. Check back to her blog if you want to read it. Not sure if this is the same idea as the solar cooker that Helen first mentioned, but it is cooking without power.

I did mention the hay box to him and he said this was different - the foil acts as a solar panel - sounds like a variation on the same theme to me though.

Oh, just found this:

I think it was the box type he must have been talking about.

Ah... I see now - not the same as the haybox thing I was thinking of.
